Subject: Re: Why did Noah cursed Ham who is father of Canaan
In reply to: CeeWee 's message, "Re: Why did Noah cursed Ham who is father of Canaan" on 22:43:55 09/27/05 Tue

My theory about this is that Ham, the second son of Noah, was nowhere near Noah's tent when Noah was drunk; it was Ham's youngest son, Canaan who dishonored Noah! Thus, the curse was placed on Canaan: He had older brothers, were Cush, Mizraim and Phut (Genesis 10:6). The curse did not apply to the other brothers. How did I come to this conclusion is that in Genesis 9:1 says, "GOD blessed Noah and his sons..." This happened when they came off the ark; there was no mention of a curse or trouble to come, yet. When GOD was speaking to Noah and his family, GOD removed an "important curse" that was placed on Adam after the fall in the Garden of Eden which made farming very hard: thorns and thistles (Genesis 8: 21-22). But, another curse was not removed by GOD, and that was "death", even though Noah and his family were saved from the pre-flood world.

Moreover, sometimes we must use our common sense: A professor in college told me that 40 days and 40 nights met a "long, long time" which translates that Noah and his family could have been on the ark for years! During those times on the ark, it may not been a happy occasion for the family: they lost family and friends in the pre-flood world. Noah's sons probably had their children on the ark, and their children knew nothing about what their parents went through in the pre-flood world! Also, one has to considered diseases along with psychological problems that Noah and his family suffered while on the ark. In my theory, I suspect that some of Noah's sons' children either became very ill or died on the ark. Also, some of the original family members may have become sick. One particular family who may have become sick was Ham, the second son of Noah! In Genesis 8: 1, it says that GOD remembered Noah and his family and made and sent a wind to the ark! After that the flood started to reced from the earth. Could there have been some problems on the ark?

I think Ham died a little bit after Noah and rest of his brother left the ark. I don't think at that time, there was a concept of grandfather. Ham's sons became Noah's sons. Ham's youngest son was probably very upset about his father's death; he may have questioned GOD and Noah! Canaan could have said to Noah, "You are supposed to be the man of GOD, but you could not stop my father from dying!" It seems like there was some bitterness between Noah and Canaan over something like that. Noah was probably grieving over everything that he lost, especially if a beloved son died, so he got drunk to forget his pain. Canaan heard a drunken Noah in his tent and went in there: he saw Noah drunk and naked. Canaan "questioned" Noah's fitness of being the the head of the family and being chosen by GOD! By doing this, Canaan was "questioning" GOD's judgment. Canaan, still angry about what happened on the ark and to his father, went back and told his relatives about Noah being drunk and his fitness of being a man of GOD!

Canaan's uncles Shem and Japheth went into Noah's tent to cover up their father's shame. Noah sobered up and realized what Canaan did, and they had a confrontation: It possible that Noah called Canaan a lowlife for what he did! Noah saw the type of spirit Canaan had, and Noah cursed Canaan for that. As we read the Bible, we find out that the Canaanites settled in what we called the present day Holy Land. The Canaanites gave, especially the children of Shem a lot problems: One particular clan from Shem was Israel, and the Canannites fought with them. Later on, the children of Israel started to marry among their enemy, Canaanites! GOD was not pleased with this, based on morality: the children of Cannan were mostly pagan and would take the children of Israel away from GOD!

It seems like Noah's curse was telling the future about these events: Canaan's clans were probably absorbed into the Japheth and Shem clans. This could explain Noah saying a "servant of servant you shall be to your brethen." The questioning spirit of Canaan caused problems for all the brothers whom he mixed with, especially the children Israel. Japheth had more children, so with add mixture of the spirit of Canaan; that spirit spread like a wildfire, where ever that they settled; the children of Isarel was corrupted morally: they paid a price for that---they were spreaded all over the world. It seems that Canaan's other brothers tried to keep there distance from him, but this does not mean that they did not absord his clans into thier clans. Therefore, if all of these events are true, it could explain why Ham was not mentioned in Noah's curse on Canaan ,or Ham's other sons were not mentioned in the curse. They had nothing to do what Canaan did: Ham could have died which explains why he was not there with his other brothers to cover up Noah's shame.

Also, keep in mind that clans may have been identified by their father's name, such as Ham. Thus, Ham the father of Canaan: in other words, this is Canaan from Ham! The Bible says, "And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakeness of his father...(Genesis 9: 22). This was Cannan, not Ham. It would have be phrased as Ham saw his father, without mentioning his sons, if Ham did this. Again, the curse did not affect the other brothers of Canaan. Cush's son was Nimrod who was one of the first great rulers of the earth!(Genesis 10: 8). The Noah's curse seemed to be used by Europeans about 500 years ago to conquer Africa which is believed to be settled by Ham's descendants: It was used to steal lands and natural resources of Africa such as gold, diamonds, and silver; also, it was used to justify slavery! Cush, Mizraim and Phut were the sons of Ham who settled in Africa, and they were NOT covered in the curse. Therefore, the European countries had NO RIGHT to rape Africa of its resources! From what I see, they spinned the Holy Scriptures to do this: Ham was slandered and so were Cush and Phut and Mizraim who loved their father, Noah, and honored their father! Lastly, the descendants who live in much of Africa seem to honor their elders! Yes, Noah's curse was used "as weapon" on people who were mostly innocent! That's all I have to say. Comments?!

Sincerely,
GenTu/Marilyn
