Petroleum based fires always produce heavy black smoke. It is not an example of a an oxygen starved fire. I offer an example, you must have seen on tv a huge pile of tires burning, tv stations love them for the effect, heavy black smoke while sitting in a pile outdoors with all the oxygen they could ever want.

The free fall speed of the collapse, engineers have stated that the building was designed to flex under high winds and not remain rigid. This makes sense for a 110 story building sitting on the New York harbor. So with a support structure designed to flex and the weight of the upper floors would cause the free fall like a house of cards. With each floor adding to weight of the one below I think it explains it.
