Subject: Smash Pull to Within One Game of Playoffs

Steel Valley utilized its sixth home game in nine contests to pull to one game of .500 and one game of a playoff berth with a 27-13 win over the Fort Wayne Safari in Week 9 action. "In this league, it doesn't matter the opponent, every single team is extremely tough to beat. We did what we have to do, and we're close to our ultimate goal once again," Smash coach Dan Jackson said after the win.

Steel Valley QB Fred McNair, in his second start, went 17/26 for 198 yards, a touchdown and an interception. After the game, he was asked about his long-term viability as a starting quarterback in this league. "I am making improvements week by week, and there's always speculation. I do what the coaches ask me to do, and that's all I'm going to worry about. I hope to have a long career in this league, but if I don't, that's what happens. I don't really care to discuss anything that is going on with the job other than that."

The Smash offense was helped tremendously with a 161 yard effort by the run game, including 112 yards by David Ruter (who also scored a pair of touchdowns). Coach Jackson was pleased with that effort. "It's good to see him get it done for once. The line did its job, and the backs did their job."

The biggest component of the win was the Smash's ability to completely stop the Fort Wayne offense. They gained 249 passing yards, but on 50 pass attempts, and only got into the end zone one time. A quick 14-0 lead by Steel Valley forced the Safari into pass mode almost every down. "When you force other teams to do what you've previously been forced to do, it makes things a lot easier," Jackson stated.

Steel Valley starts their awful trip of four away games in their last five to end the season with a game in Madison. The Madison game is for a playoff spot, as a Smash win would put them at 5-5 with two wins over the Mad Dogs.
