Subject: Smash put out valiant effort, but fall at home to champs

The champion Dayton Skyhawks showed that the Steel Valley Smash aren't quite there, yet. "We almost had 'em, but they pulled away at the end. This team is tired, and we need a full offseason to rest and get ready with these new guys. There are also some issues here and there to discuss as well," coach Dan Jackson noted after his team's 24-10 loss.

Steel Valley held serve with a 10-10 tie for the majority of the second half, until Dayton's dominance turned evident. After Dayton scored to make it 17-10, they forced a 4-and-out with a sack on QB Mike Hohensee on the fourth down to get the ball back. They promptly went down the field, scored, and that was the end of it.

Rumor in the valley has Jackson, also the GM, looking for a running back to probably replace Ruter. "I don't want to disclose anything we're doing yet, but I am not pleased with the run game."

The Smash end with two road games, where they could get into the playoffs. This week, it's at 6-6 RiverCity. The Renegades (former Green Bay Bombers) hold a 7-2 series advantage over the Smash. RiverCity won 20-15 in Wheeling earlier this season.

SMASH NOTES
Steel Valley has already matched its win total of three years ago, when the team went 5-9.

Former Smash WR Richard Scroggins scored his first touchdown for Mobile in a 31-13 win over Madison. He only had the one catch for 6 yards.

New pickup Jon Elder had another 95 receiving yards, as he's shown the world he's the #1 receiver in Steel Valley.

Fort Wayne has moved closer to their ultimate quest, the first FIFL team to finish 0-14. They dealt possibly the FIFL's best OL (Bob Wegner) earlier to the Smash.

TE2 Bret Cooper has one more TD catch (4) than TE1 Brian Greene, but Greene has 36 more catches (49) than Cooper (13).

Rumor is that the Smash are going after Lincoln HB Leotis Flowers. These rumors are unsubstantiated, but worthwhile, since Flowers seems to be a burner, something Ruter's 3.5 yards a carry shows he isn't.
