Subject: Ups and downs make Smash confident

The Steel Valley Smash went through a tumultuous first week of the FIFL season, with two games played close together. First, they hosted the perennially downtrodden Lincoln Lightning in Week 1, and lost a 21-20 heartbreaker.

Gameplanning appeared to be the problem, as the Smash only ran 12 times all game. Coach Dan Jackson replies. "Yes, that was certainly my fault. I thought we could catch them sleeping on the pass game, so we went with it all day. Well, I made a tactical error. If we play like this, and I coach like I did there, we'll lose in Dayton by 40."

Mike Hohensee's Smash-best QB Rating fell dramatically after failing to complete 50% of his 54 passes, while letting former Smash QB Major Harris go to 2-0 against his old mates (56-17 massacre in 2000 being the other game). Harris didn't really care at that point. "Jackson's the only one still with the team anymore, so what's the big deal?"

Leotis Flowers showed some hope in catching 6 passes for 101 yards, including a 67 yard touchdown that put the Smash back in it. Little did anyone know that Flowers would move to 4th in the FIFL in all-purpose yards with a 203 (combined rush and receive) yard effort. His exploits (23-159 rushing and 5-44 receiving, with a score) helped the Smash pull off a 23-17 shocker in Dayton, the first time the Smash won in Dayton since 1999.

Smash radio, however, brings you the text of the portion of the game that gave the Smash the advantage early on. "Rosenborough and Drakeford back to receive the kickoff. Joel Rosenborough takes the kickoff a yard deep. He's out to the 10, goes up the middle to the 20, HE DROPS IT! Fumble on the kickoff! There's a scrum, who has it! DJ CRANE HAS THE BALL, SMASH BALL! Crane's to the 10, to the 5, and he's caught from behind at the one! SMASH BALL, FIRST AND GOAL ON THE ONE!"

Dayton's fans were out of it, and the hardy Steel Valley faithful that made the 200 mile trek were rewarded. Not even a patented Skyhawk rally could save them this time. Jackson had a slightly different tone this week. "We fixed our mistakes quite nicely, I think. I think this team is looking like it should, after so long. The fans deserve a team that is actually good, and this one is going to deliver that."

Steel Valley goes back to Wheeling to host the always-tough Louisiana Bayou Beast.

David Ruter's next reception will put him in sole possession of #2 on the Smash all-time list with 221. He is currently tied at 220 with Youssef Sareni. Kalen Deboer is only 19 away with 239.

Brian Gardner is 4 tackles away from Leonard Taylor's 237 to become #5 on the all-time Steel Valley list. Cecil Doggette is 6 away, at 231.
