Subject: Smash showing signs of improvement

That was the theme of this week. Give the young guys the bulk of the playing time. Sure, it would probably result in a whacking at the hands of playoff-hungry Madison, but it is for the better. "It doesn't usually work the way you plan it," head coach Dan Jackson said after the game. "We had a shot to win it, and we gave it up somehow we usually don't, with the punt return. I'm real pleased with how this team fought back, though."

Fought back they did. Despite Madison's best efforts, the Smash defense was unrelenting. Cries of "do your worst, we're not getting blown over" kept coming up. The fans, easily the team's best attended game since the division title of 1999, kept this team in it. A late punt return for touchdown by the Mad Dogs was the difference in this game.

QB Fred McNair showed more improvement, going 23/42 for 282 yards. But it wasn't good enough. "I don't like not winning. I didn't do enough on offense to do it. We've got one more try, and we'll make it work."

All signs point to a breakout season in 2004, but the Smash have one more try to get that third win, this weekend against the archrival Green Bay Bombers.
