DATELINE BATON ROUGE… The Louisiana Bayou Beast opens the 2004 season with some changes for this season. Here’s our analysis:

QB: … same as it ever was… excellent, with noted improvement at QB2; Eric James is a starter on other teams.

RB: HATED to cut Steve Akin, but remaining players excellent; no real blazers, but solid, tough grind-it-out bruiser types should maintain excellent Beast rushing attack.

WR: somewhat suspect, but should be enough targets for wheelworks to inch up lifetime stats list. Overall crew should complement the rush attack nicely.

OL: Completely revamped; the superstars are gone, and the players-in-waiting from previous seasons are now in place. Tony Altman will man C1… he is the pivot this OL will swing on. Past experiments were less than successful with this move… but logic dictates he is `the man’ at C1. 2003 draft picks Tony Plantin and Scott Hough man the G positions. Projected C1 Carl Warren backs them up. We were hesitant to make this move, but TC made it necessary. This is a gamble compared to the studs we had last season, but these are capable replacements. We expect little if any drop off in efficiency in this area. OL James Kirkland moves from G to OT1 and James Kirk improved enough to assume the OT2 slot. 2003 import Brandon Bergstresser provides excellent relief. This team will miss the bullish ST from last season, but should make up for that with speed and guile.

K/P: We expect Brian Hurley to improve % wise with a slight increase in accuracy for 2004. P Tony Dodson is a GM Jimmy Hanlon special. John Butler is a stud athlete, but the philosophy is the weaker ST will place punts inside the 20 instead of touchbacks. Special teams should benefit by getting down field faster to cover punts. This has worked in the past, and we expect it will play out as planned in this league.

DL: Weakest link on this squad, which is why we drafted heavily here. Regardless, we had excellent results in 2003 with this same group which challenged for the overall league lead in sack in 2003.

LB: This is an unproven re-aligned squad . The hope is Troy Asbell can take over as LB1 and be the next Dan McCarty. Lacking somewhat in speed, ST, EN and IN are positives, which will make this an interesting group to watch.

DB: Louisiana has never fielded a more impressive defensive backfield in its’ entire existence. Proven commodity Kevin Bouis moves back to S1, where he started with this team 2 seasons ago B4 the global reduction. Backup depth is very good. CB improves after a record setting season in INTs in 2003. Troy Hill played his way into the CB2 slot opposite standout CB1 Quincy Sorrell. Depth is more than adequate. The veterans at the bottom of the depth chart are disappointed, but none can argue the incumbents are ready to rock.

SUMMARY: Rebuilding is never easy. There are many areas of concern for this season. Still, we expect to be competitive and challenge for the division lead once again. As always our ultimate goal is to win it all. Is this realistic? We remain confident in our ability to get it done. Only time will tell.
