Subject: Excitement in the Air

For the first time since 1999, excitement is in the air concerning football in the Steel Valley. That year, the Smash rode a cinderella story behind a roughshod offensive line and questionable defense to a 9-5 record and division championship.

Fast-forward to 2004. People are starting to talk on the streets favorably about the Smash. Water-cooler talk is starting to pick up. Hopes are again up. Who do we have to thank for it?

A freaking tight end?

That's right. TE Brian Greene single-handedly won over the hearts of Smash fans everywhere last year when he nearly broke the TE receptions record with 74. When asked what his plans are for this year in the receptions department, he deferred. "My plans are to have enough catches to win 10 games and the division title."

Coach Dan Jackson had other thoughts. "Greene is not the only guy we're counting on. We have a good receiving corps with Scroggins, Wyatt and Schexnayder. We have one of the league's best running backs in Ruter. Our offensive line is good. We have as good a team as we had in 1999, but they're still getting to the level where they can be."

What about the defense, coach? "It's the best defense I've had in my tenure here. Defensive players are at a premium in this league, and we're starting to get a group of very good ones in the Valley. Corker, Tarabella, Phillips, Fields, James, Doggette...we can match up with the better teams in this league on the defensive side of the ball. I've never been able to say that before."

But it all revolves around a tight end. "Teams have to worry about me and my 74 catches. It's that simple. I will open up things for the receivers wide, and for Ruter to catch some balls and get yards," Greene noted. "I don't envy the defensive coordinators that have to figure out how to stop me, then the other guys after stopping me."

The Smash's sixth season begins this week at home against the Wichita Warlords.
