Subject: Mobile Defeats Division Foe

Mobile at home defeated the Mississippi Firedogs. It was game which shows how the new look Seagulls win games in 2004. The aerial circus of 2003 is replaced by a top three defense in 2004. The Mobile offense racked up under 300 yards of total offense, and failed to score a single point in the game. The defense added two, but the special teams were the hero for the victorious Seagulls.

The game began with a 48 yard drive by the Firedogs that lead to a 38 yard field goal. Later in the quarter, punter Joe Metzka pinned the Firedogs on the one yard line. The defense got the Gulls on the board two players with the safety, and the baseball score of 3-2 was shown at the end of the first quarter. The next period would belong to the Gulls however.

After the free kick, the Seagulls drove down 61 yards on 9 plays, but were kept out of the endzone settling for a 25 yard Moser chip shot. That put the Gulls ahead for the first time, and they would never look back. With less than five minutes in the half remaining, Lester lead the Gulls offense on a 7 play 44 yard drive. However this one again sputtered, and Moser came out to kick a 37 yard field goal. The Firedogs took over deep in their own territory with slightly over a minute to play in the game. The defense got the three and out needed to give the offense one last chance before the end of the half. As it turns out the offense didn't need it as Kenny Causey had an 84 yard punt return for a TD, his first in his career.

To begin the next half, Carl Aikens had another brilliant kickoff return to give the Gulls terrific field position. a long 26 yards occurred on 7 plays, but Moser made good on the drive from 32 yards. The Gulls again got possession of the ball, and moved into Mississippi territory. Moser attempted his longest field goal of the day from 51 yards, but failed to connect. That seemed to give a spark to the Firedogs. Dicken came out and lead the Firedogs on a critical drive 59 yards down the field. Dicken eventually connected with runningback Damon Benning for an 8 yard Touchdown pass. The offense successfully converted a two point play to make it a one score game at 18-11.

The fourth quarter began with Mobile being stuffed on the possesion following the touchdown. The momentum had swung over to Mississippi. Billy Dicken lead the Firedogs down to the 20 yardline in Mobile territory. On second and ten, Dicken went back to throw, but was harrassed by the relentless Mobile pass rush. He threw the ball away, but was flaged for intentional grounding. The momementum had swung back to the Seagulls. The defense prevented the Firedogs from converting a third and long. Mississippi sent kicker Reinecker out to kick a 36 yard field goal. With a little over 10 minutes left in the game, Reinecker brought the Firedogs within four. Mobile answered right back though. Aikens started things off right with another great kickoff return. This time he returned the kick 48 yards. Kenny Causey made three big 10+ yards on the drive down to the Mississippi 8. The Gulls were again denied a touchdown in the redzone, but Mike Moser restored the seven point lead with his fourth field goal of the day. As important as the three points, the drive ate up 6 minutes of the clock. There were only 4 minutes left in the game now. Billy Dicken came back out to try to lead the Firedogs back to a tie. However his attempts failed when he was sacked on fourth down by veteran linebacker Robert Psencik, who was out there due to the earlier injury of starting linebacker Robert Mayer. Mobile was unable to gain a first down though, and had to the punt the ball back to the Firedogs. Now with only a 1:22 left in the game, Dicken's last chance came. However, it was not too be as the Mobile defense proved to be too much. The drive was smothered after four downs. Billy Dicken was again sacked by linebacker Robert Psencik. The Gulls had earned a hardnosed win at home 21-14 with their defense and special teams play.

Next week the Gulls travel to another division foe, Texas. Texas has played exteremely strong in the first three weeks as well. Texas opened the season by beating the Bayou Beast in Louisiania. The Gulls and Terminators have very similar teams. Both teams have top five defenses, with Mobile's coming in third in yards allowed and Texas at fourth. Each team's offenses leave something to be desired. Texas and Mobile are both well in the bottom half of yards gained, with Texas the slight edge over Mobile. It should be an interesting game. The only injury between both teams is that linebacker Robert Mayer is still dinged up. That will mean more playing time for the defensive hero of the game for Mobile, Robert Psencik, next week. Hopefully for the Gulls, he can make some more plays that lead to another Gulls victory.
