Subject: Beast a Long Shot in Week 4

Dateline Baton Rouge… The week 2 W over Mississippi was reminiscent of last season… indeed, our performance this season has been one of slow adaptation. Week 3 was more a matter of indifferent ownership… had Steel Valley assessed and deployed talent to its’ advantage, the outcome may have been different. Regardless, I’ll take it. Here’s how this team shakes out entering week 4:

QB: Joshua “wheels [irony intended]” Wallwork has been his efficient self… zero turnovers, clutch when he needs to be. Surprise bonus that Eric James went 4 for 4 when wheels got dinged during a critical 4th Q rally that produced a TD to defeat the Fire Dogs. May have to rethink our trades if this player continues to perform that well. Matt D’Orazio continues to impress team scouts… he may have a future here at Taveras Thompson’s expense… stay tuned.

RB: Somewhat a disappointment so far. We have been so far behind that we have been forced to pass to move the pigskin. Big plays are a plus. The ‘somewhat’ comes from failure to establish the run early. May need to move away from our ‘RAM IT UP THE GUT’ philosophy. Balance is still evident by games end. Quality RBs are a plus, especially late in the passing game.

WR: We were forced to shake up the pecking order after a sad week 1 showing… with powerhouse Mississippi on deck, Chester Lewis assumed the WR4 duties… and the team has won ever since. Willie Austin has either been superb, or played decoy to promoted WR2 Lee McCormick. This player showed flashes last season as a return man. Buoyed with increased responsibilities, he has a renewed confidence translating into productive numbers. WR3 Rodney Boykin has played as expected. Depth is the key here… this team needs to provide targets for wheels… if we continue to do that that, the O will produce.

TE: Our offensive game plan was specifically selected for the wide selection of plays designed for the TE. Ron Darden has taken full advantage of his opportunities… and contributed significantly to our improved special teams play.

OL: Reshaped after the debacle that was week 1, has performed well since. Still see a stronger C1 in our future… and age is catching up with this team here. Unexpected penalties smack of lack of practice time… Chalk that up to position changes… we expect steady improvement with familiarity.

K: Bojovic was player of the game in week 3… can’t defense blocked kicks (damn John Corker and stock PAT teams!) Butler benefits from improved special teams… LBB rank 1st in opponent KO returns (14.0)

DT: 9 (NINE?!?) sacks from the Beast in week 3?!? 15 (tied for 3rd) for the season? Only downside is the aggressive approach allows opposing RBs room to roam. That’s fine by me… “Time is on my side.”

LB: Still learning, but capable. Hilsenroth player of the game for week 3. Good depth here will pay off.

DB: S play improved with incumbents Kevin Bouis and Jeremy Jensen… somehow they seem to track down loose RBs… still learning to adjust coverage wise in new D scheme. CB by committee late in games… only drawback… relief on the horizon in all areas for future seasons.

Week 4… Need you ask? AT TEXAS… y’all know how I feel about the Terminators. “Kick ‘em when they’re up, kick ‘em when they’re down” drones the old Eagles tune at the Bayou Dome. “We need this one as bad as we needed the W in week 2” blazed Hanlon at a local press conference. “This is where we need to make our move for the division tile. Win your division, you’re in the play-offs.” Texas WR4 Jimmy Dean is out, but this is probably a non-issue. Texas most likely looks to improve its’ anemic running game against a Beast defense that seems to be a bend but don’t break type. Beast will look to establish the run because the Terminators own the #1 pass defense in the league. Special teams are a wash… both teams are performing well in this area… another down-to-the-wire finish will ensue. The Beast has come with a way late to win the last 2… can Jimmy’s cardiac kids pull out ANOTHER W ON THE ROAD? Don’t count on it… and don’t bet on it… ya never know in the FIFL.
