Subject: Smash a Considerably Younger Team

A couple of weeks into the 2002 season, the Steel Valley Smash decided to make a drastic decision at the team's nucleus. A complete rebuilding of the team's roster was necessary to compete in the FIFL in the future. Head Coach Dan Jackson was elevated to Smash GM in order to get the types of players he feels are necessary to make a run in a couple of years.

"We needed to do this to get this team where it needed to be. Even with a lot of the older guys who have higher profiles, like Sid Hall and Sammy Walker are gone, this team has played harder and tougher, and has really become a pleasure for me to coach. But the work isn't done yet."

The Smash have picked up a few cornerstone players they hope will be the team's future. First, quarterback Rashard Casey. "Casey is a good player that needs a bit of refining. I think he'll come to his own as the season goes on," Jackson said about the team's new franchise quarterback.

Cornerback Chris Armstrong was another big player, acquired in a trade with Fort Wayne. "He could become the centerpiece of this defensive backfield for years to come. We have (Cecil) Doggette, (Terrance) Barber and Armstrong, these guys will be pretty good pretty soon."

Cornerback Terrance Barber was also acquired in a trade with Mississippi. "I was surprised this guy became available, he could be better than Sammy (FIFL Interception leader Walker) in a few years. Huge pickup for this team."

The Smash have nine games left in the 2002 season, where you can expect more trades to happen and more older players to be cut for younger blood. "The fans have been supportive of the team's moves. I hope they continue that support, this team will pay off for all of that support very soon, I think."

The Smash continue their 2002 campaign with a home game against Mobile and former Smash receiver Youssef Sareni.
