Seems like every team experienced 1st game playoff jitters… lots of uncharacteristic penalties and odd weird happenings. We credit this to the increased level of competition this season in the FIFL. Teams with depth, high IN and especially high DI perform better in the playoffs. TO WHIT:

Black Hills at Springfield: This game smacks of a rain soaked muddy field. The only thing we like better is snow! This was a sloppy game featuring bad penalties and turnovers at the worst of times. It ended dramatically with a Machine FG with 0:43 left on the clock. WR5 Cliff Branch played a key role late in the 4th Q. Springfield ends a Cinderella season with a promise for next season improvement. Black Hills overcomes a major obstacle.

Mississippi at Madison: LATE GOAL LINE STAND PROVES TO BE THE DIFFERENCE! The Fire Dogs had 2 cracks from 2 yds out to put this one away. Here’s your ballgame: Mississippi's ball on Madison's 2 yard line. Fourth and goal, 0:58 left in the fourth quarter. The score is Mississippi 12, Madison 17. Mississippi's QB1 #2 Billy Dicken is sacked by Madison's DE2 #62 Eric Baranczyk for a loss of just over 6 yards. First down, Madison! Mississippi’s QB Billy Dicken, WR Jo Jo Justice and HB Damon Benning wore out TV announcer vocal chords all afternoon. It wasn’t enough in the end. The Mad Dog defense was up to the task.

Wichita at Utah: Lots of gutsy play in this one… Utah goes for 2 seemingly after every TD and fails, Wichita breaks out to 17 – 6 halftime lead. Jamie Lee is mentioned often. Utah just flat out took over with 10:00 minutes left in the 4th Q to forge back into the lead. Wichita would NOT go quietly into the night! Wichita's ball on Utah's 12 yard line. Third and 10 to go 0:03 left in the fourth quarter. The score is Wichita 17, Utah 22. The pass from Wichita's QB1 #1 Ben Morie was incomplete. The pass was intended for WR3 #87 Frenchie Buckner. OOPSIE! Sad ending to end an outstanding season.

Dayton at Louisiana: Beast tentacles slashed through the Skyhawks with a methodic, relentless offensive attack. Dayton forged an early lead, but succumbed to the relentless Beast attack. WR Anthony Payton was huge: 3, 5, 8 10 yds for the 1st down? TD needed? NO PROBLEM! Tough to defense this guy with all the other talent the Beast has… but this guy is special… a difference maker! But even he admits he’s not the MVP on this team.

Black Hills (10-5) at Utah (10-5)

BLK offense 8th 108.1 rush - [3rd] / 216.1 pass - [11th]
defense 6th 64.2 rush - [1st] / 239.8 pass - [15th]
scoring 25.3 for - [1st] / 20.4 against - [9th]
---------------------------------------------------------
UTA offense 2nd 90.4 rush - [11th] / 259.0 pass - [3rd]
defense 4th 75.8 rush - [4th] / 220.3 pass - [6th]
scoring 20.9 for - [7th] / 17.1 against - [3rd]

Tough game to handicap: Utah has it all going for it on paper, but The Machine is, well, the Machine: winners of the 1st 2 World Bowls, proud and determined to right their slight for the division championship this season. Utah seams to have gathered itself for the playoff run. The loss of DE1 Frederick Williams is disconcerting, but not an unrecoverable loss.
Line set at Utah – 1.

Madison (11-4) at Louisiana (12-3)

MAD offense 15th 98.1 rush - [6th] / 198.6 pass - [18th]
defense 8th 90.8 rush - [10th] / 215.2 pass - [4th]
scoring 20.9 for - [8th] / 16.6 against - [1st]
---------------------------------------------------------
LOU offense 6th 91.7 rush - [9th] / 244.2 pass - [4th]
defense 2nd 70.1 rush - [3rd] / 213.7 pass - [3rd]
scoring 22.1 for - [4th] / 16.7 against - [2nd]

Louisiana opened the season with an 18 – 28 drubbing at Madison. That game provides added motivation for the Beast this week. (owner/gm Hanlon is all up in arms RE: that loss.) That was pre-Anthony Payton et all… this team is vastly improved personnel-wise since then. We give a slight edge to the Mad Dogs special teams. All other areas favor Louisiana. Look for Louisiana to establish the run and mix in the prolific passing game as needed. HB Michael Lawrence and WR Anthony Payton should loom large. TE Darden will get key opportunities. Do not discount former HB now FB Steve Akin, who has resurrected his career this season. Line set at Louisiana – 2.
