Subject: Smash looking for rebound season

The Steel Valley Smash come off of the 2002 season with renewed vigor, mainly built off of a massive rebuilding campaign that is starting to show some finality to it. The Smash are employing 19 rookies on this year's squad, with 19 more players with one or two year's experience.

The new-look Smash offense has a few toys from the old-look version, with RB David Ruter in his fourth season and two stalwarts, WRs Richard Scroggins and Chuck Wyatt, who have been with the team since its inception. A more-experienced offensive line looks to give QB Rashard Casey a better chance of performing well. But if he doesn't rookie QB Fred McNair has already been given the green light to get playing time. As according to coach Jackson, "We have to look at it objectively. Casey is the best thrower on the team, but is he the best quarterback? He's not that mobile, and he has dropped balls...but he is the best we've got at THIS moment. McNair will be getting a lot of snaps in practice throughout the season, and you will see him in in games where the outcome is determined."

The defense is led by a defensive backfield that is better than most. CB Cecil Doggette is one of the league's best corners, and he will be helped by a fairly strong LB corps, and a defensive line presence that should be better, by experience alone. Coach Jackson, however, is worried about the defense. "We have a lot of the same guys that gave up big chunks of yardage on the ground. It has to be worked with, but I have confidence that these guys can get it done. They're a lot better this year than they were last year, and all of them had a great training camp."

The Smash are not the team that went 1-13 last year. We foresee a much better year in 2003, including what could be a playoff berth! "I'm not putting anything out of the question. The roster is tenfold better, and much younger. But we did keep a few vets to give them guidance that I, nor the coaching staff, really could."

The Smash season starts this weekend with a home game against the perennial powerhouse Mississippi Firedogs.
