Subject: Winners or 1-Year Wonders?

SLAYERS 2003 SEASON PREVIEW

On the eve of the start of the 2003 season, one of the many questions that will be answered is: Are the Springfield Slayers winners or one-year wonders?

Here a few of the predictions regarding that question:

From John Ivanic's FIFL Season Preview:

"Springfield captured the attention of those around FIFL last season. The question is can they repeat? The answer is most likely no."

From the FIFL Season Preview:

"Springfield had a magical season in 2003, but we don't feel the same magic is there this season. No significant improvements other than the trade for T Justin Glasgow."

Admittedly, the Slayers did not have a great draft this season. They took some chances on young players that they hope to develop into future stars…of course; only time will tell if their gambles pay off.

Springfield did trade their 2nd round draft pick to Honolulu for T Justin Glasgow, one of the premiere offensive linemen in the FIFL. Glasgow was brought in to bolster the line with the plan of establishing an effective ground game to complement the Slayers’ aerial attack. TC, the GM of the Slayers, stated, “Glasgow was also added to help protect QB Wilkie Perez. Wilkie never once complained or mentioned the fact that he was the most sacked QB in the league last season—a total of 67 times. If we can eliminate half of those sacks, just think of what our offense can accomplish this season!”

When asked about the sacks, QB Perez responded, “I put our offensive line in a lot of tough situations last season. Not running when I should have, hanging on to the football too long, etc. I cannot blame them at all…I’m certainly not the fastest quarterback in the league. But, I spent the off season and training camp trying to improve my mobility so I can hopefully avoid a great number of those sacks this year.”

HB Anthony Simmons wants to get a minimum of 300 carries this year, and would definitely like to add to his 10 rushing TDs. The Slayer receivers are a deep group, with Fortune and Coyne emerging and both are likely to have a chance to start alongside the veteran, Heath Garland, at various times throughout the season.

The defense looks to improve in containing the run and controlling the passing games of teams. The heart of the defense returns in the 3 starting LBs-Buettenback, Coakley and Stoffell-one of the better LB corps (as a unit) in the FIFL. There have been some additions and changes in both the defensive line and the defensive backfield, which will likely take some ‘fine tuning’ throughout the season.

The Slayers of 2003 look A LOT like the Slayers of 2002…the same team that went 9-5, won the Great Plains Division, and defeated Louisiana, Black Hills, Wichita, Mobile and Portland. This team has added a quality, starting OL in Glasgow and did not lose any major players from the roster. Granted, the road for Springfield to repeat as division champs will be extremely tough, as will the battle for playoff spots. But, they never said it was easy last season…
