Subject: Smash starting to see dividends from draft

The Steel Valley Smash scrapped everything in 2002 in hopes that the future could bring some much needed help to a team that was once the most exciting team in the FIFL. With weeks 4 and 5, we are finally starting to see some of that excitement come back to the Friendly City of Wheeling, West Virginia.

In Week 4, the 0-3 Steel Valley Smash travelled to Hawai'i to face the perennial powerhouse Honolulu Hurricanes. Led by new rookie starting quarterback Fred McNair, who went 9/18 for 95 yards and by kicker JD Carlson, who had a 50 yard FG while going 4/4 on FGs, the Smash shocked the FIFL with a convincing 26-16 win in Hawai'i. John Corker led the defense with three sacks as he helped a revamped defence force RB Quentin Cradle to only 50 yards on the ground.

In Week 5, the 1-3 Smash came home to a nearly full house to face the rival Fort Wayne Safari. Excitement started to show up again in the fans as the team started to show some of that 1999 form. WR Chuck Wyatt had 111 receiving yards and a touchdown and RB David Ruter had 100 rushing yards and a touchdown as the Smash beat Fort Wayne 27-24 in the FIFL's highest scoring game in week 5. Head coach Dan Jackson had this to say about his troops. "We came into the year wanting to compete with the big boys. We made a couple of changes and now we're doing that. These guys are starting to get a little bit of that swagger that created the magical season of 1999, and that's something we need to continue to put forth every week."

The Smash continue their season this week at home against 2-3 Colorado.
