Date Posted: 11:19:06 06/25/04 Fri In reply to: Seán 's message, "THE BIBLE" on 11:16:58 06/25/04 Fri BOOKS OF THE BIBLE There are 72 books in the Bible (73 if Jeremias and Lamentations are considered separate books). Some are very short. The Book of Abdias, the prophet, covers less than a page; the Second and Third Epistles of Saint John the Apostle are even shorter. The Book of Psalms, 77 pages, is the longest in the Bible. CHAPTERS AND VERSES Each book of the Bible is divided into chapters; each chapter into verses of only a few lines each. In 1204 Stephen Langton, then a professor at the Universary of Paris and later a cardinal of the Church, extablished the division of each book into chapters for greater convenience in reading and referring to Scripture. For even greater facility of scriptural reference each chapter was divided into verses of only a few lines each. This was done in the 16th century by Sanctes Pagninus for the Old Testament, by Robert Stephanus for the New Testament. The modern chapter and verse division of the Bible are the work of these men.
