Date Posted: 12:08:11 04/04/02 Thu Thus was the dynasty founded which gave Ireland Ollamh Fodla, who established the Feis of Tara, Conn of the Hundred Battles, Cormac Mac Art, Niall of the Nine Hostages, Dathi, Laoghaire, Malachi, Brian Boru, and Roderick O'Conor, the last Ard Ri of Ireland. Ireland has been without an Ard Ri for about a thousand years. It is a principal aim of Pobal na h-Eireann to ensure that a suitable candidate, of good moral calibre, be anointed with holy oils, and crowned Ard Ri of Ireland in our age. In the Middle Ages, when Ireland's scholars had world renown, students from all parts of Spain received the hospitality of Irish universities, and Irish monks taught in the monastries of Castile. Spaniards came to regard Ireland as a place of sanctity and pilgrimage, and many of them crossed the seas, braving all the perils of the journey, disagreeable as it must have been in those days, in order to visit the cave of St. Patrick in Lough Derg, which they regarded as the gate to Heaven. At that time, many looked on Ireland as a land rich in the fruits of the earth, where men lived lives of sanctity and occupied themselves in the pursuits of learning and art. Ireland was indeed, a land of saints and scholars! But with God's help, Ireland's sons and daughters will usher in a new golden age for our beloved nation... will make her a bright, shining light in a troubled, disturbed world.
