Defense Against the Dark Arts
Into the Forest
Part one of the trip! This is only the intro and should be medium length. The trip is going to take a long time and for the sake of keeping this a class I might just give you all some stupid homework that is easy and has hardly any point but I’m not sure yet, I’ll tell you at the end. Now for a few notes, two students, Erin and Joanie, have said they would like to fight something. Kitty is a new student who will be joining our class. Rajah, actually I tried to get your character from the message boards. I’m happy you liked it. I try not to use people unless I really know their character and I am thrilled it worked out. Ok, lesson time!

Professor Figg waited in the Great Hall, Professor Lupin at her shoulder along with Snuffles. Hagrid and Professor Potter might be meeting up with them shortly after a few of their own classes. She wasn’t dressed in her usual robes and slightly heeled shoes but instead in hiking boots, a white blouse, and brown pants. After working as an under cover auror for years she had learned that sometimes it was better to be dressed as a muggle than a witch. When uncover, when in a fast-passed battle, and while hiking through a forest were among the best times. Professor Lupin, after must prompting, had dressed in similar attire. He was clad in a pair of muggle jeans, slightly worn out, and a sky blue t-shirt. Snuffles meanwhile had a red bandana tied around his neck.
Watching her class file in she noticed that many of them were wearing such clothes under their robes. Draco Malfoy on the other hand was wearing his usual uniform. Hermione Granger was carrying her satchel over her shoulder and a quill was stuck behind her ear. Ron Weasley meanwhile was busy telling Joanie about how there was nothing to worry about in the forest, his chest puffing out a bit. Harry, who was at his shoulder rolled his eyes and looked over towards Samantha Riddle. A common habit of his now of days. Samantha looked tired, her eyes almost seemed dull and her face was very pale. She almost seemed weak, like those in St. Mungos who had undergone torture. Harry caught her eye and shot her a look of concern. Her eyes soften and then Draco took her arm.
“You ok?” Draco asked, looking at her pale face and then at Potter.
‘”I’m not a doll Draco. I’m fine! Is that the only thing you can ask me anymore?” Sam responded in her usual sarcastic tone, but it was missing something. Draco couldn’t put his finger on it but it felt like Sam was losing a part of herself.
“I know you aren’t a doll Sam, you’re a princess,” she flashed him a cold stare and the mention of princess and her eyes almost seemed red, like one of Becca’s apples, “and I can ask you something else. What’s with you and these Gryffindors lately? First Peters and now Potter. Are you under some kind of mind control spell or something?’ Sam gave a chuckle; she was in a way under Voldermort, her father’s, control.
“Draco, you call me princess and I call you ferret boy, how does that sound?” Draco’s eyes nearly popped out of his head at the mention of ferret-boy and Sam smirked. “Didn’t you think I would do my homework before I became you girlfriend? Secondly, nothing is going on with the Gryffindors. I would prefer, no, I insist that you leave that topic alone or I will, and I swear I will, remove your need to wear that special piece of protective gear while playing quidditch.” Harry who had overheard this conversation tried hard to crack up, Draco gave him scowl and murmured something like “No you wouldn’t” but Sam heard it perfectly clear. “I will Draco. I swear.”
Becca, meanwhile, was filling a green colored knapsack with bright, shinny apples. She counted them as she went along.
“One, two, three, four, *munch * ok, this is four, five…” Soon the bag had around a dozen bright apples and she threw the bag over her shoulder. It would have to last until lunch; Professor Figg had said that there would be apples for lunch. This would make it until then, they had too. Somebody had been throwing her apples into the lake recently and they were getting harder to find.
Ella and Eva were both discussing the new addition of Witch Weekly, there was an article there that had interested them; 101 Ways to charm you hair by Belle Cheveaux. Both girls had put sparkling streaks of silvers and greens in their hair for their upcoming quidditch match.
Amy Weasley was saying good-bye to Arabella Peters at the top of the staircase. As Amy turned and started down the stairs Sam and Arabella exchanged a small smile before Arabella, who was being called by a friend of hers, waved goodbye and swiftly ran down the right side hallway.
After a few moments, when everyone was assembled, Professor Figg called for silence.
“Hello everyone! It’s a beautiful day for our trip and I want to get started as soon as possible but first I thought everyone should get comfortable. I would like all of the students who wore muggle clothing under their robes to remove their outer robe and hand it to Bubbles,” she pointed to a small house elf at her side, “she will make sure it gets back to your dorm. If you aren’t wearing muggle clothing come over to either myself or Professor Lupin to have your clothing transfigured for the time being.
The majority of the students removed their outer robe; Ron was wearing his Cannons shirt. It clashed horribly with his hair. Hermione wore a t-shirt that read Freedom: The ability to act of your own free will without the consent of others. This is a right, for witch, wizard and elf alike! Written in sparkling blue. Samantha Riddle wore a dark green top and black jeans but Draco stood still.
“Draco, hurry up. I want to get out of here all ready.” Sam said, folding her robe and handing it to Bubbles.
“I don’t wear Muggle clothing.” He replied matter of factly. Sam sighed, annoyed.
“Draco Malfoy go over there and get your bloody uniform transfigured this instant.” Sam hissed.
“You aren’t my mother.” Draco spat.
“No, I’m not a half wit!” Sam snapped.
“At least I have a mother! Mine didn’t abandon me when I was born.” He snarled. He realized it right after he said it. He went to apologize but Sam slapped him, her eyes were turning watery but she wouldn’t cry.
“You will not speak to me again.” She softly said, turning she headed toward the front of the group, away from Draco. Looking over at Sam Draco decided the best thing to do was to let her cool and listen to her so he stood behind Goyle and waited for his clothing to be transfigured.
After everyone was finally dressed in comfortable clothing and Hermione Granger had given Bubbles a few of her books they started out towards the forest. Professor Figg was giving some directions as they walked.
“Class, first of all no wandering off. Always stay within view of the group as a whole and stick with a friend or two please. Secondly, I know this sounds a bit daft, but no feeding the animals. At least not with myself or Professor Lupin there to give the ok and make sure it all goes well. Remember those spells we went over and keep a cool head. This is only a trip and myself and Professor Lupin are fully capable so don’t worry. Come on now.” She finished.
It was a good half an hour walk from the castle down to the forest. Harry fell into step next to Samantha with Snuffles at his other side.
“You ok?” Harry softly whispered. Draco meanwhile had glanced this out of the corner of his eye.
“I’m fine Potter.” She whispered back, not looking at him.
“I know what fine means. I’ve been fine for a long time. Fine means that you aren’t alright. Fine means that something is wrong.” Harry pet Snuffles and waited for Sam to answer.
“Potter…Harry, I’m ok. Really. I’m...” She was saying but Harry cut in.
“I know, you’re fine.” With that he started to speed up his walk and fell into step next to Ron and immersed himself in the idle chit chat, adding a yea and your right every so often. His hand went to his head and he rubbed his scar. It had been bad a lot lately Voldermort was getting more powerful, but right now that pain was a little higher. Looking back at Sam he felt like she could sense it also. Draco kept looking over at Sam, he was worried about her. She did look awfully pale. The walk continued with the same idle chit chat, but thoughts were streaming in all of their heads.
Upon reaching the forest they were breathless, not from the walk but from the site. A place is a beautiful as it is dangerous would describe the forest. There were beautiful plants, and flowers. Small little birds sung and flew through the trees and insects hummed. They were only on the edge of the forest, the outer ring, and everyone knows the danger doesn’t lurk on the ponds edge but in the very center.

Ok, that’s all for now. I know it wasn’t that long but I think I got a fair amount of characterization done for the plot. Most of them will be about this length give or take a hundred words. This one, for those who are counting, was almost 1,500 words. Go on and count them, I know you won’t. The name of the writer for witch weekly is French and translates into beautiful hair, I needed a name and figured it wasn’t that bad of a name, she is French and Belle is a normal name. Now I said I would give you guys something small and stupid for homework so I was wondering if everyone could just give me a book title or a movie title along with the author if it is a book. I need a good book or movie so name anything you can think of. I read Star Wars and watch Moulin Rouge; I have a large range of likes. Anything you guys can think of please! I have until September to watch movies and read as much as I like so this is a desperate plea. If anyone has a thought or suggestion on the lesson I am all ears. I would love to hear your input. Ok, until next class…
