Subject: Impression

I stepped onto the sands,
In a robe of white,
And watched the gold egg
Glint in the light.

The sands burned my feet,
But I noticed not.
My eyes were on the queen egg
On the ground so hot.

I regarded the mother
With great respect,
But it was not her that
I was to inspect.

The eggs shook
And the dragons hummed
On that day
That had finally come.

I made my entrance
With the others in white.
Then a blue hatched
Into the light.

All the boys rushed,
But we turned away
With hopes that this would be
Our Impression Day.

And then a green hatched
And a bronze and a blue,
But the queen remained still
And we did, too.

Three others were left
Of the first thirty-two,
And then the gold rocked
And she came out, too.

Now we all rushed
To the newly hatched queen
And somehow we all �knew�
We would not leave clean.

Four ran off
In fear of her claws,
And two more flew
In fear of her jaws.

I was in back
And nearly turned away,
But her pitiful cry
Made sure I would stay.

I turned and was caught
In those prism-hued eyes,
And Impression was made �
The strongest of ties.
