Subject: Big Brother UK

The first instalment of Big Brother 3 will be transmitted on Friday May 24.

The one-hour show will be broadcast on Channel 4 at 9pm.

A follow-up programme will be shown at 11.35pm.

The live 9pm programme will show the contestants going into the house for the first time in the show's history.

This year's series - which will run for nine weeks - will feature a dozen contestants as opposed to the usual ten.

The housemates' weekly tasks will be shown live on Saturday nights on Channel 4.

Big Brother is also promising to be much stricter this time around - contestants will have to give valid reasons for nominating their housemates for eviction.

Failure to do so will result in an official warning from Big Brother - and anyone receiving three warnings will face immediate eviction.

Other new features on the show include an outdoor heated swimming pool in the gardens of the specially-built Big Brother house, which is based at the Elstree Studios in Hertfordshire.

Sex change child star wanted to be on Big Brother

Child star James Harries who underwent a sex change to become a woman has been among the hopefuls applying for Big Brother 3.

He shot to fame in the 1980s as a bow-tie wearing antiques expert, appearing on TV shows like Wogan.

The 24-year-old underwent a sex-change operation last year, changed his name to Lauren, and hosted an antiques slot on This Morning.

Ms Harries was one of thousands of applicants for the latest series of Big Brother. Her application video is one of the highlights of How Not To Get On Big Brother, screened tonight on E4, which features the worst of the wannabe housemates.

Originally from Cardiff, she appears on screen wearing a black velvet top and dangly earrings alongside one of her pet dogs.

Big Brother spent eight weeks watching more than 10,000 video entries. Many hopefuls went to bizarre lengths to convince the producers they should make the final line-up.

One man pierced an intimate body part live on screen, and another played the accordion in a field naked but for a pair of wellies. A bikini-clad woman stood on a central reservation with a sign that read "Beep if you want to see me on Big Brother".

The producers remained unimpressed by the hundreds of hopefuls who stripped naked in a bid for TV fame.

One of the producers said: "I must have seen at least seven or eight different men running around wearing nothing but a horse thong that neighs."

Big Brother returns to screens on Friday, May 24, with a new house, 'tougher rules' and 12 housemates rather than 10. The final line-up is a secret but will consist of six men and six women.

Oh Brother!

A former antiques whizzkid who underwent a sex change was among the hopefuls who applied for Big Brother 3.

Another bizarre wannabe aiming for television stardom included a naked man playing the accordion in a cowfield.

And then there was a bikini-clad woman wearing a sign that read "Beep if you want to see me on Big Brother".

Big Brother received 150,000 application requests and spent eight weeks watching more than 10,000 video entries.

Thong

Producer Deborah Sargeant said: "I must have seen at least seven or eight different men running around wearing nothing but a horse thong that neighs."

Shortlisted candidates included a Rik Waller lookalike, a former homeless junkie turned preacher, a teetotal Christian and a woman who talked about her vibrating knickers.

One girl confessed she only wanted to get into the house to help her lose weight "because the food is limited and I won't be able to help myself".

Harsh reality

But Producer Paul Osborne explained the harsh reality: "Fame at best from Big Brother is incredibly fleeting. In a year's time no one will want to know who you are.

"You will not be able to get an ordinary job. You might get your name in the paper or face on the cover of Heat magazine but that's unlikely to pay the bills."

Shortlisted candidates underwent criminal checks and a psychological examination to see whether they would cope with being filmed 24 hours a day.

Big Brother returns to screens on May 17 with a new house, tougher rules and 12 housemates rather than 10.

Rumor has it that a transexual applied for the show and will be one of the houseguests.
