I can only say this, by my experiences in Florida they have a long way to go. Some of their police and politicians have a kind of patronizing or redneck "good old boy" type attitude toward minorities and elderly Jews. They are now able to be openly hostile to Middle-easterners. In the Daytona area, where my mother lives, they have had problems with white supremists. I had some minor problems with prejudicial treatment when I visited there with the children.

The feeling by the ruling party down there is that they are the real Floridians, they can do what they want and the rest are just being tolerated. They mistakenly feel like the Democratic party is comprised of minorities, Jews, bleeding-heart liberal Northern snowbirds and a few misguided local do-gooders. Thus to them - outsiders.

My mom says she doesn't think Janet Reno can beat Jeb Bush because of questions about her age and her health, but mom sure would like to see him unseated. I guess she's just one of those closet bleeding-hearts!
