We decided to give the kitties a break yesterday and left the house to them. So we set off for a day of romping one on one with Jaffe.

We ended up going canoeing. It was beautiful and we were on our way to the beach and took one of many scenic routes and as we passed a resivoire we noticed they had canoe rentals. It was too good to pass up so we stopped and rented one. We got Jaffe in after a bit of a struggle and we were all settled in - me in the front, Jaffe the middle, and Don in the back. The guy pushed us off and we weren't even completely pushed off when the canoe tumped over. Don had shifted in the boat by turning around to look behind him just as we were beginning to paddle and over it went. It felt like slow motion to me.

We were overdressed (cause we hadn't planned any of this) so our khakis and leather shoes drenched. Jaffe was confused. The guy looked at us and said "that's an all time new record". Anyway they drained the boat, we got back in and had a wonderful time. We never tumped over because I made Don sit in the front and I sat in the back to steer and compensate for what everyone else was doing - it's what I do best and what Don doesn't.

So feeling refreshed and renewed, and pantless I might add, we continue on our way towards the Carmel beach. But Jaffe begins favoring his ear, then shaking his head. He got more and more frantic. I started hinting that we needed to get alcohol to put in his ears and Don agreed - as if I was talking about sometime in the future like next week. Jaffe stepped up his shaking and began putting his head on me and on Don to let us know something was wrong. Don didn't want to stop but finally did - but that place didn't have alcohol so he said we would just wait until we got home. Jaffe came over to me and I started rubbing his ears, not knowing which ear or if it was both. He cried, well wimpered, when I barely touched his right ear. I demanded Don stop and get alcohol so we found a grocery store in some small town and when Don went in Jaffe started flipping out. He shook his head, looked at me and cried, jumped in the front seat in the drivers seat and looked at me like a hurt child. My heart broke.

I was trying to put my pants on, they were on the dashboard drying, but a woman was watching so couldn't bring myself to raise up to pull them over my behind. But his attempts to communicate with me escalated and I was just about to jump out of the car al fresco when Don FINALLY emerged.

Well he had to tend Jaffe because of the woman but he couldn't manage to get him under control and get the stuff in his ear. Finally the lady drove off. I quickly got my pants on (will never do that again - who'd a thunk it?) and got got Jaffe fixed up. Took a while and had to stop on the side of the road again to apply another dose, but FINALLY after about an hour after the alcohol he was ok.

Then we went for a short but exhausting romp on the beach. That part had sand that was like tiny gravel - very hard to walk on because it both hurt the feet and you would sink down to your calf or ankle with every step you take. But a good time was had by all. I just felt like Jaffe got short changed because the whole day was supposed to be for him to romp and instead he accompanied us while we romped.

He got depressed. I swear he did. He didn't understand the boat thing. He didn't understand why we made it capsize. He didn't understand his ears. None of it did he get and I think he thought we did it to him. At least he acted that way. He avoided us most of the rest of the evening.

He's fine today though - WHEW!

Talk about tearing your heart out.

So I just took him to the groomer to get the ears tended, luckily they were able to squeeze him in.
