TV coverage showed only the journalist trying to negotiate with the killer, although it was not yet clear who if anyone authorized him to do so, or if the hostage-taker asked for him to mediate. He reportedly wanted to talk to specific people, including the Environment and Natural Resources Secretary. When his demand was not granted he began the stabbing.
