Big Brother Gets His Revenge

The HMs are in for another shock tonight. Big Brother is finally cracking the whip on their feeble nomination excuses. This week, the whole lot of them are up for eviction. Then two of them will exit on Sunday night.

Each Monday, it’s the same. Certain HMs enter the diary room with forlorn faces and struggle to nominate other HMs, let alone give reasonable explanations for their nomination choices. Big Brother has repeatedly emphasised that the nominations come as no surprise, and they have all week to think about their choices. They must do better.

Well, Big Brother’s finally had enough, and he’s getting tough. This week, all the heads are on the proverbial chopping block, as Big Brother nominates them all for eviction. Then on Sunday night, the two most voted for HMs will both be shown the door.

Revenge will be sweet for the audience at home who’ve had to sit through the HMs stuttering and stammering as they try to decide who to nominate.

The action will unfold tonight live for your viewing pleasure on TV and on the web. The HMs will enter the diary room, one by one, as per normal. They will sit down and attempt to tell BB their choices for this week. However, BB will stop them in their tracks and inform them that they are already nominated for eviction and they must go back outside and think about why they should stay. While each of the HMs will be told they are nominated, they will be unaware that all HMs will be nominated until Big Brother informs them as a group. The HMs will then be recalled into the diary room one-by-one to tell Big Brother (and the nation) why they should not be evicted.

Supervising producer, Richard Stomps, said he’s expecting to see some serious squirming among the stronger characters in the house. “Some of them have been expecting the worst, trying to guess potential scenarios with new intruders, or a mass exodus, but I think most of them will be worried that a mass nomination could mean their days are numbered.”

He thinks that even those HMs who have remained underneath the radar until now, will feel the rug being lifted from underneath their feet knowing that they could be evicted . “At first, they’ll probably laugh it off and think it’s quite funny. But, as the week progresses, I think we’ll see them feeling the heat, which should turn the conversations and interactions up a notch”.

Buckle in boys and girls, it could be a long week.

Swearing takes Big Brother off the air

Alison Gray

THE latest series of the reality show Big Brother has started as it means to go on - mired in controversy.

Within hours of "live streaming" of the activities in the house being screened on the digital channel E4, Channel Four had to take the broadcast off air because of profanity and a fear that the housemates were breaching regulations by making defamatory comments about others.

A spokeswoman for Channel Four said last night that the station was committed to satisfying the demands of the ITC at the same time as broadcasting as much of the reality television programme as possible.

She said: "Before 9pm we comply with the rules for family viewing, and that means dipping the sound when the housemates swear and piping in the tweeting of birds.

"However, if there is a sustained period of swearing we have to take them off the air for a bit until they cool down."

She added: "After the watershed, we are a little less worried about bad language, and as the evening gets longer, there is more of an adult audience watching."

Despite this liberal approach to the use of swearing, the station is on high alert for defamatory chatter from the housemates. The spokeswoman said: "Obviously, the programmes we broadcast are the edited highlights, but the people that tune into the live streaming at all hours of the day or night might see coverage stopped, with a screen warning that it has been paused for legal reasons.

"We’d do that if we were worried about what the housemates were saying about people."

Viewing figures for the first night were welcomed by the channel which recorded 5.8 million viewers, twice as many for the first programme of the last season.

The first broadcast clashed with Have I Got News for You, the topical quiz show on the BBC which drew in 6.5 million viewers - one million more than usual - to watch the host, Angus Deayton, squirm in the wake of newspaper revelations about his private life.

The spokeswoman said: "The housemates’ confessions to the diary room are reserved solely for the programme and will not be seen during the live streaming.

"Lynne, the housemate from Aberdeen, will tell Big Brother that it has all been a bit difficult to take in and that she is looking forward to the group chilling out a bit," added the Channel Four spokewoman.

The series may have just begun, but the bookies have already settled on a clear favourite.

Kate, 22, an IT administrator from Beckenham, Kent, who said she forgot to pack any bras for her stay in the house, has been singled out for success.

Kate, who was shown working out, playing football and drinking beer in her audition video, is 9/2 to win the contest with William Hill.

PJ the flirty trainee solicitor is 6/1 with Hills, along with Alex the male model, Alison the bubbly chocoholic and Scot Sandy who, at 43, is the oldest contestant.

Jonny the firefighter is 7/1, ahead of the baby-faced ski instructor, Spencer, at 8/1, Lee the gym manager, Lynne the mature student and Sunita the trainee barrister at 12/1 and Adele the body builder at 14/1.

Jade the big-mouthed blonde contestant, who has admitted that she was once caught shoplifting in Selfridges, looks set for an early exit from the house.

The 20-year-old dental nurse from Bermondsey, south London, is the rank outsider to win the contest at 20/1. Graham Sharpe, a spokesman for William Hill, said: "We were almost knocked over in the rush to back Kate this weekend. She has already captured people’s imagination, but Jade is looking like the first elimination."

In the first examples of bitching in the famous Diary room, Adele tells Big Brother that Spencer does not like to get involved with house activity unless alcohol is involved.

She then singles out Kate as her new best friend and hints at the possibility of future romance.

She said: "I thinks Alex is gorgeous and gentle - but I don’t fancy him yet."

Spencer appears to be struggling hardest with his temporary new existence. He told Big Brother that his first day in the house was very slow and boring, with nothing to do.

He said: "I would really like a football to kick around the garden and a bit more space. I get on with Sandy because we both like peace and quiet."

The reality of reality shows was highlighted by one of last year’s evictees yesterday. Narinder Kaur, 28, who was third to be eliminated from the house last year, told a newspaper she had "been through hell" and is seeing a therapist.

She also revealed that she will front a new television series called Undercover Lovers this autumn.

Housemates for how long?

ALISON - This larger-than-life contestant, aged 27, is proud of her size. However, her boundless enthusiasm is bound to start to grate on her fellow housemates within days rather than weeks. She loves food, especially chocolate, and confesses to getting ratty if she gets hungry.

SPENCER - The initial response from viewers is that this quiet one is worth watching. Combines the shy and sensitive approach with laddism. Spencer, 22, said he would quite like to get voted off on week one.

KATE - The contestant who will draw in male viewers anxious to make sure that she is continuing her strict keep-fit regime. A keen football supporter, whose final words in the outside world wished the England team well in the World Cup, Kate, 22, is the blonde bombshell the producers must have been praying for.

ALEX - Thought to be in the house to offset Kate and provide some eye-candy for the ladies. A good-looking cross between Brad Pitt and Johnny Depp, Alex, 23, appears to be using the programme to re-acquaint his agents with his talents. The out-of-work model last had a job in June.

SUNITA - This trainee barrister from Brixton is one to watch. Her mildly flirtatious approach may develop if she feels the competition hotting up. She confesses to be a secret smoker and fears her mother will see her lighting up on screen. Sunita, 25, says she will miss PlayStation and The Simpsons while she is in the house, but not her colleagues.

JONNY - Quickly established himself as the leader of the group, trying to unite the housemates with humour. A 29-year-old firefighter and singer in a band with his brother, he is definitely one of the most outgoing. He admits he is vain, enjoying saunas and sunbeds, and claims his main reason for applying for the show was to "entertain the nation and put a smile on their faces".

ADELE - Coming from a big family, Adele, 23, might find that she is called upon to settle disputes in the Big Brother house. She has studied pharmacology and now works part-time as a DJ and a personal assistant. She is said to have a great voice so could provide the music for the house.

PJ - Dumped his girlfriend before entering the house, perhaps in the expectation that there might be a soulmate for him as well as housemates. The trainee solicitor from Birmingham, aged 22, admits to liking female company and he lists flirting as one of his hobbies.

JADE - The least popular and expected to be voted off first, Jade, 20, has embraced the idea of nudity to raise viewing figures and was first to strip off. Her brash approach, which includes a tendency to talk constantly at top volume, is unlikely to win her support. The dental nurse has already been dubbed the "new Helen" after the hairdresser on last year’s show. However, Helen was runner-up, so perhaps Jade will confound her critics too.

SANDY - At 43, the oldest contestant by seven years, this flamboyant Fifer arrived with four different pairs of glasses and a selection of wild kilts. The only married housemate, his age and experience might give him the appearance of a father-figure, but he may have other ideas.

LYNNE - The second Scot in the house, Lynne, 36, is a mature student who is studying art history in Aberdeen after years spent travelling. The oldest female in the house, she is also unlikely to want to play the role of mother hen. She still lives the life of a student and has described how she decorated her tiny flat for £10.

LEE - Could pass as a double for the boxer Mike Tyson, but Lee, 21, is said by friends to be a shy, quiet guy. A personal trainer and gym manager who hero-worships David Beckham, Lee has pledged to help get the others in the house into shape.
