Subject: Real Men Prefer Grilling with Ozzy's Wife, Homer

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Men who barbecue -- and wear silly aprons -- dream of rocker Ozzy Osbourne's wife Sharon, cartoon character Homer Simpson and President Bush grilling up a good burger.

At least that's what marketing agency The Integer Group, a unit of Omnicom Group Inc., said in a survey released on Wednesday ahead of the Memorial Day weekend start of the summer barbecue season.

The three were the most cited by men as people they would choose to have barbecue for them to make it a special occasion. The finicky doyenne of home entertaining, Martha Stewart, came in 14th.

Women grillers preferred doe-eyed actor Tobey Maguire, currently starring in the blockbuster summer movie "Spider-Man," followed by actor Tom Cruise and wrestler-actor The Rock, Integer said. Martha fared only slightly better with the women at 12th.

Integer said it interviewed 546 people by phone and in person in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles as part of its research for clients "to create summer promotions targeted at the al fresco set."

To show that barbecue mavens ponder more than wet versus dry rub, Integer also asked about the U.S. economy.

Of those who wear aprons with funny sayings and puns on them, 61 percent are optimistic about the economy, while only 19 percent of those who wear plain aprons are as upbeat, Integer said.

However, only 34 percent of the men and 8 percent of the women surveyed acknowledged wearing funny aprons.

Integer also found those who wear funny aprons exercise three times more than those who prefer plain aprons. But both groups -- at more than 60 percent -- were equally pessimistic about world peace.

For those wondering about the important barbecue questions -- hamburgers beat out steak, ribs and hot dogs as the most popular grilling food, while iced tea and potato salad finished tops in their categories, Integer said.

Who would you like to BBQ with?
