Subject: Giraffe Gets Artificial Leg After Accident

Nine-month-old giraffe Taiyo, meaning "Sun", who went through a
six-hour operation and was fitted with a bamboo artificial leg, is seen
in his stall at Omoriyama Zoo in Akita, northern Japan May 16,
2002. After falling and breaking a leg in a run-in with a zebra in late
March, Taiyo's limb was placed in a cast but showed signs of
tissue-death threatening to lead to blood poisoning. Followed by weeks
of experiments with numerous prototype legs, about 40 cm (16 inches)
of Taiyo's leg was amputated in Tuesday's operation. He stands 2.8
metres (9ft 2 inches) tall. REUTERS/Omoriyama Zoo
