I love animals, I do think they should be respected and never mistreated; but they are not human beings, they are still animals. As we continue to neglect the basic needs of humans beings, we should not refocus so much time, money and energy to the salvation and protection of animals before we have secured the most basic respect and protection for humans. Their still has to be a heirarchy among the species. If we can save only one from the flames of a fire, do we pick up the baby or pick up the family pet. If anyone hesitates with that choice, then they and we as a society have serious problems.

I do think that animals should be afforded protection that extends beyond the whims and cruelties of their human owners or predators, but that is not the same as thinking they should be afforded human status or human rights.
