Subject: Mission

The ships medical staff rushed around the body of the man his wounds bleeding and his general body condition poor. The Chief Medical officer looked from the monitors concern clouding his eyes, his various teams began to report in and he answered each with terse instructions. The ship was on a long looping orbit and as the hours passed the mans body healed under the banks of medical regenerators, the captain a intense woman with a short temper argued with the head of the Xeno department. "This is a failure why wouldn't he let us help him more often than he did?" The Xeno chief just shook his head and said "well he has always had a strong will, but I fear this time it has been broken." The ships intercom beeped and the Chief Medical officer's voice said "Captain I think you should come down here he's awake and wants to see you." The captain gave a grimace and answered "I'll be right there!"

Ten minutes later the captain looked at the face of the man a field Xenologist who was working under closed orders that even she had little or no access to. "Captain I must go back in 48 hours to complete my mission." The captains face was dark with suppressed rage "Complete it man after what happened the way those savages treated you. I would have thought it was over already." The mans face looked sorrowful "My orders come form the highest authority and if I don't complete my mission I may do more harm than good." The captain shook her head and then said, "Well I guess you know what you are doing." The doctor began to protest he won't be fit to do anything even the medical regenerators won't heal him in time." The mans soft face hardened for the first time in the three years they had been on station to be his backup. "Doctor healed or not I will complete this mission and in forty eight hours I will go back." The chief Xenologist said well at least let us give you a better backup this time." The man nodded his head in acquiescence. The doctor shooed them from the medical facilities watching as the man began to slip into sleep.

In the captains office many decks above she led a briefing of the security teams to back up their star guest. As the briefing broke up she signalled the Xenologist to stay. " What do really know about this guy?" she asked him he shrugged " Captain no more than you do, I was posted to this mission with a limited resume of the mission so far." The captain paced a thing her younger officers often mimicked behind her back, which she secretly smiled at. "I suppose Central does know what's been going on here?" She mused aloud, the chief Xenologist shrugged "I hope so I have been sending regular reports." He looked grim and haggard," after what happened when those renegades started the trouble quite a few years back we had to try and turn events to stop any chance of contact for at least another hundred years or so." The Captain looked at him sharply; "who are we to interfere? I think we've done more harm than good." The Xenologist lifted his hands in abject defeat "perhaps he can pull it off. I have every faith in him and until that renegade crew sneaked in all was going well. I still don't think we have routed them out completely." The Captain waved her hands in dismissal, The ship began its long loop back and under the sedatives the man with his fast regenerative powers healed. Forty hours later dressed in simple native robes he sat at the table in the mess room eating slowly crewmembers gave him a wide berth and looked down or away. In the centre of this activity the man seemed oblivious to their conduct and stared into the distance, a receiver in his ear updating the situation to him. He closed his eyes and patterns formed on the inside of his eyelids, the full link established he got the update on the mission.

As the update ended he slowly opened his eyes and a look of profound sadness crossed his face, "what am I doing? What have I done?" He muttered to himself, he stood and made his way to the staging area. Inside his support team readied themselves, he nodded to them and climbed in to the shuttle settling himself. The flight to the surface was uneventful and the silent shuttle settled in the predawn gloom on the hillside. It's chameleon like camouflage making it invisible to the natives. "We have to be quick, first team in." The team leader said, he looked at the man. "Are you ready sir?" The man nodded and made his way out of the shuttle and over the hill. He stumbled down the other side and made his way through the groves of trees, the first team had done their job and waited for him. A sound startled him and his two companions froze as a native woman came round the curve in the track he ducked back as the two men ignited their suit glows. The woman came to an unbelieving halt, looked at the two security officers, she spoke to them and then turned, and her head down clear sounds of crying coming from her walked away. The man could bear it know longer and calling her name walked into view. In absolute delight she fell into his arms. "Oh you came back you said you would and I believed you, the others were so frightened and they won't come out." The man reassured her and then as she turned to go on an errand he had invented he sprinted back to the shuttle. The landing party commander looked at him and said "we nearly ruined that." The man shrugged "I have managed to buy us some time, let's get out of here for now. We will be back later for another meeting." The man sank wearily back into his seat not as healed as he thought. The shuttled lifted and drifted upwards on its repeller drive, ashen faced the man slumped. The Commander looked at him, felt the heartbeat on the right hand side of his chest, and said to the helmsman "take us up to the Father-ship and let me talk to the doctor now." The doctor came on line "what is it?" The landing party commander spat into the microphone "he nearly collapsed but he bought us some time. Get that regenerator ready JESUS isn't ready to walk on water again yet.
