Subject: strange little hawk like bird

I've searched the internet trying to discover what kind of bird got caught in a sticky trap I had on the back porch that I had already caught a mouse in. It was attacking the mouse...and what a bloody episode that was! It looked like a mockingbird. Mockingbird size. Gray. Black and white markings. When I caught it and the trap and the mouse to hold it (with heavily gloved hands) while my husband oiled it's feet to remove it from the trap I was amazed to discover it was a small hawk like creature. Hawk like head and hooked hawk like bill. It eats mice. It isn't the first time they've robbed traps or carried them off, but it's the first time I got a close look at it. I can't find anything like it on any site. It is a soft gray with black and white stripes on it's tail and wings like a mockingbird...only it had little black bandit mask markings around it's eyes. It was NOT a mockingbird. I know them very well. It was not a kestrel...at least not a regular one...it had none of the color or markings of a regular kestrel. It is a dive attack, mouse eating bird with a vicious little predator hooked bill. Anybody have a clue as to what it is?

Thanks.
