Colin Fry Medium for Living TV
Colin Fry: The Debate
Colin Fry is a medium working on Living TV. But is Colin Fry what he seems? In 1993 the official Spiritualist newspaper 'Psychic News' made some serious allegations about the authenticity of Colin Fry's mediumship. On this website we have published the allegations made by Spiritualists about his alleged Fraudulent mediumship. The Public Relations machine of Living TV is in full gear promoting Colin Fry but it is important that the public are aware of the other side of Colin Fry and the fact that he may not be everything he claims.
Other forums discussing the Colin Fry issues: A debates are currently running on the James Randi Forum the Living TV Forum the UK Psychics Forum the Waterloo Spiritualist Forum the Campaign for philosophical freedom and the Colin Fry Newsgroup.

Although we understand that the issues raised in the Psychic News articles will cause heated debate we ask that you refrain from posting personal or defamatory comments about Colin Fry, Living TV or Derek Acorah. RE: Colin Fry Video- unfortunately we do not have enough webspace or bandwidth to show the video clips that were recently shown on TV about this issue.

In 1992 Colin Fry claimed that he was producing ectoplasm during his seances at Scole Norwich. Spiritualist became so excited by his claims that the hitherto unknown medium Colin Fry became front page news on their official newspaper The Psychic News. Ectoplasm is a mist like substance that is generated by the medium and can form into full figures of spirit people. This type of seance is conducted in a pitch black room. The medium is usually put inside a cabinet (like a wardrobe with no door) and tied to a chair to prevent cheating. Many physical mediums from the early years of Spiritualism were able to manifest remarkable figures from ectoplasm. Some of these cases were investigated by famous people such as Sir William Crooks, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Arthur Findlay and Air Chief Marshall Hugh Dowding. Sadly, physical mediumship began to disappear and the last medium able to produce full ectoplasm figures was the medium Gordon Higginson who died a few years ago.

COLIN FRY & PSYCHIC NEWS:
Naturally the Spiritualist Newspaper 'The Psychic News' was excited when physical mediumship was claimed to be making a comeback. To add to the excitement the medium who was achieving this refused to reveal his real name. Instead he went under the name of 'Lincoln' and would only communicate through the mouthpiece of the organisation that he had helped found called the Noah's Ark Society. (NAS) After six months of hearing these rumours of astonishing physical mediumship every Spiritualist in the land was itching to know who Lincoln was.

Eventually it was revealed that Lincoln was in fact the little known medium Colin Fry. Everyone was so excited. Sitters from he seances claimed that they felt their loved ones physically touch their faces. They could feel ectoplasm hands hold their own hands. And most astonishing of all, a trumpet painted with luminous paint would float around the room. This was some of the most astonishing physical mediumship since the early days of Spiritualism.

During the procedure Colin Fry was strapped to the chair as is the Spiritualist tradition. The straps would be checked by an independent person before and after the seance to prove that Colin Fry was in his seat throughout the proceedings. Week after week The Psychic News reported on these remarkable seances but then everything went badly wrong. Suddenly the lights were turned on.

In the middle of the room stood Colin Fry holding the trumpet that only moments earlier had been floating around the room.

COLIN FRY Psychic Medium
The Psychic News & Spiritualists reaction
The Psychic news were hugely embarrassed by Colin Fry's actions. The editor at the time was Tim Haigh - a fair minded man who insisted that the findings were published even though it was embarrassing for Spiritualism in general. Unfortunately we only have issue 3174 of the Psychic News. If visitors to this site have copies of the Lincoln news stories and the controversy afterwards they are welcome to post the text on this forum. The information here is from the Psychic News dated 10th April 1993. This was written in defence of Colin Fry to answer the allegation that were made.

Society issues statement
in support of LINCOLN (Colin Fry)
From Psychic News April 10 1993

FOLLOWING their investigation into the Scole, Norfolk, seance, where the physical medium known as Lincoln was caught holding a trumpet, the Noah's Ark Society (NAS) has issued a statement supporting the demonstrator.

It was sent to PN together with a report by technical consultant Hylton Thompson on the broken tyraps (bonds) used to secure Lincoln to his chair.

"We have fully considered the circumstances surrounding the incident in the Scole cellars,' explains the statement.

"And, in light of the forensic report on the broken tyraps and the critical analysis by our technical consultant, Hylton Thompson, together with consultations with the guides of the medium, are of the opinion that no useful purpose would be served by prolonging the investigation any further

'The history of physical mediumship is riddled with anomalies as was stated in recent issues of our newsletter and PN.

"We have been fortunate in that Lincoln has shared his mediumship with us from its inception that members have been able to follow its progress and development with its comitant encouragement to other circles."

The statement continues: "We feel that Lincoln now needs time to strengthen his mediumship within the confines of his home circle and will, therefore, not demonstrate publicly until such time as his guides give explicit instructions for its resumption.

"In view of the incident we have reviewed our security precautions and have taken extra measures to protect the mediums who demonstrate for us.

'Finally, we would like to thank all those who took the trouble to write or phone expressing their support to Lincoln and the Society.

Colin Fry medium- fraud allegations by Psychic News
Technical consultant reports on bonds broken during seance.
Colin Fry report from Psychic News 10 April 1993

Commenting on the examination of Lincoln's bonds, Hylton Thompson describes the tyraps as extremely strong, quick-fastening cable ties "rather like a PVC bracelet."

Designed so that they cannot be undone by pulling once tightened, the technical consultant explains that the two fractured tyraps could not have snapped, as neither sample showed evidence of stretching.

"Viewed through a simple magnifying glass, one of the principle fractures appeared to have been sawn with a very fine saw," he writes.

"The other fracture did not offer any immediate clues other than that it did not appear to have been conventionally cut, deformed or fatigued prior to breaking- the general appearance indicated a high-speed fracture."

Taken to a commercial research facility specialising in testing plastics to destruction, the fractured tyraps underwent an unofficial and free investigation.

Unaware of the circumstances surrounding the breaks, an examining scientist felt one had been produced using a small very high speed circular saw with very little pressure being applied- deduced from the cutting pattern.

"The other break was of more interest to him," explains Mr Thompson.

"Asked how he would attempt to reproduce this fracture, he said he would tightly grip the tryap between two vices and with the narrowest possible gap between them,

"he would then arrange for a sharp, heavy pendulum to strike the exposed material centrally at high speed- rather like a guillotine but much faster. This would cause a brittle fracture..

"On reflection he thought that it would be better to freeze the tryap to a very low temperature first- using liquid nitrogen."

After further studies by polymer scientist Dr Jim White at Newcastle-upon-Tyne University, he agreed one bond has been sawn, but was unable to reach a conclusion about the second, more interesting break.

"Clearly, it would be unreasonable to expect a straightforward explanation in material terms if forces were used which could not be explained within the confines of present day scientific knowledge," writes Mr Thompson

"On the other hand, the results certainly haven't proved that a supernormal force was responsible for freeing the medium's wrists from the wooden chair arms."

Commenting on the precautions which were taken at the seance to prevent deception, the technical consultant stressed:

The tryaps were selected at random from a bag of several hundred.

They were examined before use.

At least one wrist was "tryapped" by an independent sitter.

There was no smell of chemicals in the room- it was suggested these could have been used to help break the bonds- and experts said those required would have a pronounced odour.

There was no damage either to the medium's wrists or the chair arms.

So what are the technical consultant's conclusions?

"Deception cannot be denied but I refute that it was conscious deception on the part of Lincoln, (Colin Fry) who, all the evidence suggests, was in a very deep trance and suffered considerably in many ways as a result of the incident," he says.

"Furthermore, I am totally convinced of the integrity, dedication to truth, and sincerity of the NAS's officers and committee and the leader of the Swift home circle (In which Lincoln sits) who were present at the incident- I have come to know them all.

"The society has, to its credit, devoted considerable effort and funds towards proving the innocence of one of its young mediums who has great potential."

In Mr Thompson's opinion the deception was the work of an intruding entity, "who should not have been able to gain entry," and that no conscious fraud was perpetrated by either the organisers or the medium.
