Carol - am posting here as I have not heard back from you about the emails I have sent and don't want to lose research. I believe the below is your family in the 1895 Iowa Census. Note that Peter was born in Dubuque County, Iowa and there is an older son, "Mathies" also born in Dubuque County. You could perhaps find a marriage record on Peter and Gertrude in Dubuque County. The younger children were born in Ida County, Iowa

In the 1900 US Census they are living in Sac County, Richland Twp, town of Odebolt as of the first day of June. "Mathies" must be living on his own by now.

- Nicholus, son, born Sept 1881, age 18, single, born Iowa, farm laborer
- Frank (J.?), son, born Dec 1885, age 14, single, born Iowa
- Mary, daughter, born May 1888, age 12, single, born Iowa, at school
- Gertrude, daughter, born June 1890?, age 9, single, born Iowa, at school
- Catherine, daughter, born March 1893, age 7, single, born Iowa, at school
- Bernard, son, born May 1895, age 5, single, born Iowa
- Caroline, daughter, born May 1848, age 2, single, born Iowa

By 1910 they are living near Danbury, Iowa. Note that there are now 7 of 11 children living. The older children are now out of the household, although Nicholas is still there at age 28.
