The Diary and the chamber were not exactly something"small" in book 2. They were the main story!!! Something small was like how it was sirius black that gave Hagrid the motor bike to deliver harry to dumbledore in book 1 ch.1. And that's all you hear of sirius black the whole of book one and 2. Book three is all about sirius. It's probably going to be something that no one even noticed.
