well, its on again. the tradition of blood, sweat, pride and on occassion disappointment resumes this friday night with the clash of the pies and the blues. Carlton, looking down the barrel of 0-3 to start the season and Collingwood keen to improve on their 1-1 record and begin a long awaited charge to the finals in 2002. The game has evolved since the heady days of the 70's and 80's where 90 000 fans would turn up to scream at each other as much as the players. WA, SA, NSW and QLD are now all represented and the coveted premiership has travelled to all but Sydney. The Western Derby gets the sandgropers in a spin and the Crows and the Power dislike each other, but still nothing compares to Collingwood vs Carlton. Irrespective of form, ladder position and potential, these blockbusters arise passions lacking for much of the season. They bring the closet footy fans out in droves as the players strive to trump their suburban neighbours. This is hatred at its best. Over 100 years of tradition goes into every minute of these matches and so it should. This week, it is Collingwood who has the opportunity to rise and stake its claim. With so much promise for so many years, some would say its well overdue. They face a demoralised Carlton, thumped in the media as much as in its past two drubbings to st kilda and sydney. Many believe the Blues pride will lift them - we at Collingwood expect nothing less. They should respect the institution being a magpie(player or fan) holds within us all. Collingwood has much to gain. Their 1300th win in the VFL/AFL for starters, the first club to achieve this if they win. But more than that, they have a chance at payback. An opportunity to kick Carlton while they are down and breed a new found fear and respect among the Blues players. Payback for the thrashings, (optus oval, 2000, for starters, let alone the '79 and '70 grand finals), and a chance to prove to the fans and the football community that Collingwood will not tolerate the disrespect Carlton shows it. It is time. It is war.
