In 1998, the FBI reported that there were 7,755 bias-related hate crimes committed. Of all these attacks, 56% were motivated by racial bias, and of these, 38% were against blacks. There were likely 10,000 to 50,000 other cases that weren't reported to local authorities or that were simply unaccounted for or possibly not reported to the FBI by local authorities.
