Um, there's a reason Angeles was the most violent vampire to exist. His host wasn't exactly a good person. It took Angel MANY years to reform. And I actually believe Spike has a better chance of achieving it than we ever saw with Angel.

Angel ate everything, forget rats, he liked to feed on babies! Spike didn't. William was the true romantic, forever loving creature. Spike still inhibits some of these characteristics and I'm sure you're well aware of it. But Buffy/Angel rabids never really get out of that denial hole so...

And the rape issue, wasn't that Joss' most obvious plot device to switch things up? Spike/Buffy fans were popping up faster than any shipper group that was ever out there, Joss knew the only way to cause the friction he needed in order to truly have us going "GAWD, Spike sucks now!" was the been-there, tried-that rape conflict. Other than that, I certainly didn't buy it. Spike's been a desperate lad before, didn't rape anyone. If it's one thing I've never sensed of him, it's hate/violence against women.

Then again, I'm sure people like you are glad he tried to rape her. Gives you more ammunition, no? ;)
