I don't know much about the SX-64 (having used it only sparingly), but from what I recall you can hook up a 1541 to the serial port and use it as drive #9. You may need to hook up a 1541-II, however, as it has DIP Switches in the back for selecting (physically) the drive number.

As for "software selecting" the drive number, you may need to search Google, or more specifically, search Google for a reference to RUN magazine's Magic Column. I know RUN published such a Magic Trick years ago in one of their issues.
