Subject: Commodore 64 sound problem

I have an old commodore 64 that I have had for a long time. For some time now the sound will cut out and then it will come back maybe days later. I have not used this for a long time but thought about digging it out for my teenagers to play around with. Any suggestions?
PS. It is not the cables. I think it is a hardware problem.
