Subject: A few cents on CN
In reply to: Ray 's message, "Tru Dat'" on 02:14:29 11/15/02 Fri

I remember WAY back before toonami they had that action Block with Centurions and few other show (I Think Hong Kong Phooey was even part of it) and other then that show, back then CN was pretty unremarkable. Space Ghost and Dexter were just getting going and Turner was pimping the HELL out of that Johnny Quest show (The show refered to as "the bad times" by Tom himself). Then Toonami started up and it created a bit of a buzz with Thundercats, Voltron (later replaced by Robotech), and those 15 minute blocks of old school toons. But (and Dare will hate this) Sailor Moon is what put it over the top. When SM was on it became the number one rated "kids" show and made Cartoon Network as big as it was. DBZ only furthered that trend in the ratings as well. They built on that with shows like Reboot,Ronin Warriors,Outlaw star, and Tenchi.

Unfortunatly they lost Sailor Moon for a second time. They moth balled Tenchi, Reboots long gone as is Ronin Warriors, Silverhawks must have been a disaster becasue I never even heard of it running on CN (during my off time without it...damn adelphia) untill I Dled an episode a few months ago. Not to mention the Turner/Time Warner relationship is dieing off quickly, CN is scrambling for veiwers again. Toonami is basically a shell of it's former self with DB and DBZ. He man's not bad, but not getting them the number ones they want, and Transformers makes Johnney Quest look like ER. They were trying with Hamtaro and Zoids, but I think they gave up on that by now. I'm not going to even mention Gundam becasue it sucks and I hate every version of it :-)

Anyway. I think CN is trying to make up for Toonami's losses with expanding Adult Swim, unfortunatly, they don't have the new programming to do it and it's destine to fail. But in CN's universe, they will promote the HELL out of there original 'toons bfore they use anything else (Aside for DB/DBZ) A sure sign of this was when a few seasons ago they debuted 30(!) new original shows.....none of which were around by the next season (Aside from Courage being the only one worth watching and few tatters of two or three other shows) Dexter and PPG are basically the only ringinals that made a difference, then when the movie came out they over did it. Promoting the movie EVERY commercial break 24 hours a day and those damn marathons. That didn't help the ratings any.

What Cartoon network needs to do is get 5 or 6 NEW shows for Adult Swim to draw intrest to the repeats they are going to show. If you are going to go 6 days a week, give people a reason to watch, not show the same 6 episodes of Birdman and 10 year old repeats of Space Ghost. For Toonami, Keep DB/DBZ since that's the only thing that is working for them and try a new show that may catch on and become the next big thing (Digi Charat maybe?)

(Wouldn't be surprised if Turner quits and starts all over again)
