Subject: Cool Anime I've seen Recently! And Manga!

Rose of Versailles--Got a fansub of the first 4 episodes... gorgeously animated, with vivid colours, and stunning cinematics. This is a great show, and it's a shame no one's licensed it. It's also sad that none of the french stations are showing it here [though they show next to no animation nowadays]. This is an awesome show, and I hope to see more of the gutsy Lady Oscar. She fights out of duty, but it's a duty to herself. Love the opening song too. For some reason, I keep thinking that he tean of Sarah LaFleur and Barbara Redecki would be awesome as Oscar and Marie Antoinette :) [they of Uranus and Neptune fame]

Maetel Legend-- the animation's pretty good, and it's a nice prequel to Galaxt Express 999 [and sequel to Millenium Queen]... I got the dub VHS, which was actually really good. I heard that the japanese version was a tad more cheesier [though it is a bit cheesy either way]. Still, great Leij Matsumoto fun :)

Serial Experiments Lain-- Vol.1-Navi
This was really fascinating. Lain's personalities, her friends, the selfcontained arcs of each episode... this is just good stuff. Delightfully alternative approach ot the animation, which reminds me of the artier short films that come out around here. The live action scenes at the end were odd, but the oddity overall made it so wonderful... the bad part? I'll have to wait a while to get more :(

I got that all last month... this month I also got some new Manga :)

CardCaptor Sakura Vol.7-- adding to my 2, 11, and 12, I now have 4 volumes of CCS, all from Pika Editions of France. The translations great, and the art shine on the very high quality paper they use [a thinner, glossier pure white newsprint]. Also nice is the use of japanese style covers [ie-glossy colour sheet over a regiular 2 colour book cover]..And the Clow/Sakura Card bookmarks :) This volume had Yukito. The comic is very charming, and reintroduces Sakura's world, as she begins her quest to make the Clow card truly her own. I heard that Tokyo Pop is doing books 7-12 as a new series [CCSakura-Master of the Clow 1-6], and is using their new format in this edition. I'd highly recommend getting it... they're including the bookmarks, and it will also be unflipped.

Astro Boy Vol.1--- Classic comic, this book is just full of fun, and reads still fresh and exciting despite being ecades old. Dark Horse wisely chose a cheap, paperback stly format, like Lone Wolf and Cub, and this comic is just wonderful. I hope to get more volumes soon :)

Angelic Layer Vol.5--- I got the japanese Vol.5, as I ordered it before TP licensed it :) Nonetheless, it's a sweethearted end to teh series [thank goodness for my so-so japanese... what little bit I can understand does help :)]
I can't wait to get Vol.1 of the english verison, which is unflipped...
A warning about TP's new format though.... Sound effects aren't translated. So you should learn katakana and Hirigana to fully appreciate the books [though from my japanese books, it seems sound effects at Katakana only].
I also read in a review that some asides were left untranslated as well.... which may be due to the faster production schedule.
On a neat note, Angelic Layer's dialogue is done by James S. Rich, of Oni Press fame ^-^ If Jamie is as good at dialogue as he is at picking swell comics to edit, I say we're in for a good deal. He's also writing Clamp's WISH
