They tend to have a pretty big following. With Scooby, there area a TON of people who love the characters, that grew up watching the shows. The movie studios are will to bet people will go see the movies no matter how much they look like they're gonna suck. The first Casper movie did well if I recall correctly.

With anime, I think it's a little trickier. I don't know if the audience in the US is big enough to support a big time mainstream movie release so you know they're gonna make whatever changes they think they need to make to get asses in those seat. I couldn't give two craps about DBZ, but I really wouldn't want to see a live action Akira (or any other anime, really) . They really should just let the original stand as it is and not go messing with it. That goes for Scooby too.
