Rocks.

While the original was cool back in the day it hasn't aged well. At all. When I see it now, everything from the music, to the animation, to the character designs screams cheese.

I'm happy to say the new one is awesome. It really doesn't matter if you didn't like (or haven't even seen) the original since this is a stand-alone story, not a sequal. The animation is gorgeous. They used a few computer fx here and there but they blend in well. I usually don't like comp and cell animation combined but it doesn't stick out like a sore thumb here.

At any rate, it's definately at least worth checking out. Rent first if you're a bit wary.
