Subject: flat earth

Guys,

As I said, I do not consider it good use of my time to debate science and scripture with people who I believe are either unwilling or unable to deal with physical realities.

If after reading information like that posted at
Problems with a Global Flood, 2nd edition
a person still refuses to seriously consider the possibility that the Bible is describing a local flood then I tend to think that person is so entrenched in his beliefs that nothing else I might say could ever get him to do so. The fact is, many people believe what they believe for various reasons. Fear of what may lie on the other side of their present belief system is sometimes very high on that list. A young earth creationist may reason, "If I open myself up to the possibility of a local flood and an old
earth then maybe I will soon start thinking that other parts of the Bible might not mean exactly what they seem to say, and then maybe I will soon be doubting things like Christ's resurrection." I understand such fears. But
reasonable Christians will not allow this kind of fear to rule their lives.

Young earth creationists talk nobly about how they respect God's Word more than they respect the scientific wisdom of this world. But if the Bible does not agree with physical realities which can easily be demonstrated to be true, then can the Bible really be "God's Word"? No it can't. Because God cannot lie.

If, for instance, the Bible plainly and repeatedly said that the earth was flat I would not accept it as God's Word. For Science has now, to my satisfaction, proved that the earth is not flat. However, believe it or not, there exists an organization of "Christians" today who form a group called "The Flat Earth Society." They really do believe that our earth is flat and they quote a large variety of scriptures to support their position. They say
that all "proof" to the contrary, such as photos taken of the earth from space showing a round earth, are all part of a vast conspiracy led by Satan. Now even young earth creationists laugh at these people. They tell them that
they simply misunderstand the scriptures which they cite to prove their "flat earth" case. I find this quite strange. Why? Because scientists tell us there is a better chance that our earth is flat than it is only a few thousand years old.

When our present understandings of scripture are clearly shown to be in conflict with observable physical realities then reasonable people must admit one of two things. Either their present understandings of scripture must be wrong or the Bible is not God's Word. I hope they choose the first option. But, as I said, I no longer have time to waste arguing with "The Flat Earth Society."

In Christ,

Mike
