Visitors from Virginia right at home on West's court

Notre Dame Academy traveled nearly 5,000 miles across North America for an Anchorage basketball tournament, but don't confuse the trip with a vacation. Notre Dame, a college preparatory catholic high school in Middleburg, Va., made its first appearance at the Alaska Airlines Classic on Friday and showed class on and off the court.
Pat Behan, Notre Dame's senior center, took a Christian Literature exam at 10 a.m. at the Hilton Hotel, where his team is staying. Behan said he aced it, of course.
Then, about nine hours later, Behan and fellow teammate Rich Flemming took West High to school on the court. They combined for 38 points and powered the Dragons over the Eagles 57-51 at West.
In earlier tournament action, National Christian Academy (Md.) beat West Valley 63-39 and Heritage Christian knocked off East 68-48.
"We came here to win three," Behan said. "I really like it in Alaska. It's something I've never seen before."
Behan, who finished with 16 points, was something West had never seen before, either. The 6-foot-8 forward, who's headed to Bucknell University next season, took over in the second half.
The Eagles (7-2) led 26-21 at halftime and were playing great defense. They held Notre Dame to just eight points in the first quarter. West's offense looked sharp too. Phillip Hearn had seven points while all-state guard Ramon Harris and teammate Brian Hurn each had six.
But Notre Dame made adjustments in the second half, drawing West defenders inside then dishing the ball to Behan for open three-pointers or Flemming for an easy bucket in the paint.
West, however, couldn't find the hoop. Harris scored the Eagles' first third-quarter basket with 2:54 remaining.
"They took us out of our offense," West head coach Chuck White said. "On defense, we kept losing 31 (Behan). We can't do that. You gotta know where their good shooters are."
Behan drained two three-pointers in the third and finished with 12 second-half points. "He's our man," Notre Dame assistant coach Skip Walker said. "This was just a great team effort."
And when Notre Dame's backcourt couldn't find Behan, they found Flemming, the 6-foot-7 senior who scored 12 of his game-high 22 points in the final 16 minutes.
"We played like we expected them to roll over for us," White said.
To the Eagles' credit, they trailed 37-26 in the third quarter and trimmed Notre Dame's lead to four with less than four minutes remaining.
That's when Harris, who finished with a team-high 17 points, turned up his competitive switch. He made a key block and steal, which resulted in baskets.
But Behan's shooting touch was too much. He scored four points in the final minute to seal Notre Dame's victory.
