Subject: A couple of questions for Eric

Eric, I know you are from the State College area and I wonder if you could address a couple of questions about State College athletes headed for the Patriot League:

1. On Willie Morse - - -
A) I saw that he initially committed to Penn State at the end of his sophomore year in high school. Had Penn State really offered him a scholarship that early or was it kind of a unilateral "commitment" on his part?
B) What happened to cause him to end up at St Bonaventure instead? (Sadly, these days Penn State is not that much better than St Bonny, but there is a big difference in the quality of competition and the perception.)
C) At St Bonny, judging from his 27% shooting pct, it looks like he never got untracked. Why the quick transfer to Colgate?

2. On Eric Meister - - - I have read that Flannery never really recruited him, despite the geographic proximity. Was there any reason other than Flannery simply feeling he had better forwards in his sights (i.e. Behan, Evans, maybe Nash, and also Michael Gately, who would have gone to B.U. had he been offered - he ended up at Columbia after the Bison landed the other two)?

first, i honestly dont know about the meister situation. my personal feeling is that eric isnt a prototypical pat flannery 4 since he only has range out to maybe 12 feet. though hes a good player who i think will be a decent patriot league forward down the road, he certainly wasnt too good to pass up, especially with behan (a great flannery fit) on the table. im not sure if eric had any interest in bucknell.

i am fairly familiar with the willie morse saga, though. yes, he did indeed commit to penn state as a sophomore. im not sure how 'formal' the scholarship offer was at that point, but it was certainly generally agreed upon that he would be recieving a scholarship. however, things went downhill quickly with the firing of jerry dunn. some believed at the time that the loss of interest was willies alone while others felt it was mutual. in a situation like that it is often hard to discern the truth. but nonetheless, when morse reopened his recruiting he found himself a midmajor recruit. the opportunity to play in the a-10 lead him to st. bonaventure.

as anyone who has followed the program knows, st bonaventure was in a huge mess when willie committed. im not even sure if he ended up on scholarship his first year because of the restrictions, though the concept was that he would eventually. im not entirely sure why he decided to transfer so quickly, but there are certainly plenty of understandable reasons.

as for ending up at colgate, it was one of his finalists prior to his st bonaventure commitment. i know he visited and enjoyed the school. looking back on it all, it looks pretty ugly. willie is a good kid though and should do very well in hamilton.

sorry i cant be of more help... my best basketball connection has in recent years moved on to bigger and better things. well, hes going to be an accountant.

By the way, the State College paper has a good piece on Morse's battle to recover from the lightning strike last summer ... I didn't have time to post a link on the site, but it can be found at http://www.centredaily.com
