A couple of articles St. Joseph's Prep championship and John Griffin:

First Article

Speedy Morris admits to being spoiled. In three years as head coach of St. Joseph's Prep, he has guided the Hawks to two Philadelphia Catholic League basketball titles and three Southern Division crowns.

The one common link has been two players who didn't even know each other before their freshman year, but are inseparable now. They are third-year starting guards John Griffin and Chris Clark, who combined for 52 points during last night's 84-61 win over Cardinal Dougherty in the Catholic League title game.

The Prep's record the past three years with the two seniors is 79-11, with one more postseason tournament to play.

"In three years, I've been blessed with those two who are leaders and tough kids," Morris said. "They don't look tough as nails, but they are, and they know how to play the game."

When the two enrolled as freshmen, they didn't know each other, but a bond and friendship quickly developed.

"I love him like a brother," said Clark, who had 25 points and five assists last night. "We have spent so much time together on and off the court, and I wouldn't want to play with any other player."

The feelings are mutual.

"I love the guy," Griffin said. "He is our floor leader and general, and I can't say enough about him."

There is something to be said about senior leaders. When the season began, the Prep was considered solid, but it also graduated considerable talent from a championship squad.

"People didn't think we could do this," said 6-foot-3 sophomore Reggie Redding, who contributed 16 points and 10 rebounds. "John and Chris have done a great job leading this team."

Clark is unsure of his college plans; Griffin will attend Bucknell. Both realize that they have been part of something unique.

"We have developed a great chemistry together," Clark said. "We'd work out and watch tapes together, and it's a relationship that will always be special."
