Apart from loving these books for many other reasons, I have to admit they were good for a really nice drool. Oh, what luxury it is to find an author keen on men with long, dark hair! ("...the warm wind from the window arches turned chill, lifting the grey-eyed lord's fall of hair as if he were undersea in a current, spreading the strands like dark wings". Ooh, that is so sexy.)
I've had this yearning (another form of Langothe?) since I was 8 years old when I first read Alan Garner's "Moon of Gomrath" and fell in love with Albanac. "...out of the night came a black horse, wild-eyed and sweating, and halted in a spray of sand. Its rider, a tall man, himself clothed in black, called up into the tree... His straight hair hung black upon his shoulders, gold glinted at his ear, and his eyes were like burning ice". For the rest of my school years I sat, every day, staring out of the window and dreaming of a tall man with long, dark hair, who was going to gallop up on his big black horse and carry me off into the sunset. Alas, I'm still waiting...
Ms Dart-Thornton, if you read this, I would be eternally grateful if, in all your future writing, you would continue to give your heroes long dark hair!
