Subject: Wrestling Dissers! (get your facts straight!)

Im sure Gareth will agree with me on this subject.

I have decided to write this message in responce to any arm chair pundits who sit on their arse and declare "wrestling is fake". Basically implying that there is no skill or gut determination involved and all the wrestling world contains is men rolling around in tights. I developed this inspiration after hearing a group of lads in a pub for about 15 minutes coming out with comments such as "Its pathetic, they talk about all these risks of not trying it at home but where is the danger? they're just bouncing on a big trampoline." This reminded me of no other than Martin Huddart berating wrestling in one of my graphics lessons, and just as I did with Huddart, I corrected the comments of those fools in the pub. Anyway to the point...

Yes, in some respects wrestling is fake, such as in a case of faking a punch by using an open fist or pretending to kick someone in the head when they are on the deck. However in every wrestling match you will ever see there are alot of times when wrestlers do accidentally make heavy contact in one of these situations and for example, kick someone in the face. Does their opponent quit and walk out the ring? Not a chance, he keeps going, taking more and more bodily punishment. So is that fake? I think not.

Secondly further on from Just punching and kicking is the wrestling itself. In reference to the 'trampoline' comment made by a fool the ring is not actually very padded. It consists of a spring then some wood then some padding then some more wood. Surely if it was all padding the wrestlers feet would sink into the mat?! Being thrown around a ring hurts a hell of alot and the only reason these wrestlers do not break their backs when they are slammed on the mat is because they are trained to divert the shock of the bump to other areas of their body, however it does still knock the wind out of them. To give you an idea of what it would be like the best thing to do it to take one of the old gym mats used to do forward rolls on, take a sheet of wood from D.T. and get mr Reading to pick you up and throw you down to the ground. So the groan the wrestlers make when they fall 8 foot onto their backs is not put on in the slightest.

The term pushing your body to the maximum is an under statement in all wrestling across the world. Wrestlers take a risk on their bones, their ability to walk and in some cases their lives in every maneuver they perform. Because like in any circumstance it can all go wrong and what looks like a simple move can turn into a broken neck for one of the competitors.

In my opinion wrestlers are not pathetic men in tights. They are real hard men who put their bodies on the line for the interest of sports entertainment.

Some other facts:

- The blood you see in some matches is not fake, it is real blood. The wrestler uses a small razor blade to slit a cut in his own head when attention is diverted from him. (I will never forget Huddart declaring that it is tomatoe sauce)

- The injurys wrestlers receive are real. They arent gimmicks used by companies to give some wrestlers a simple holiday. They are where they are because they love their business.

- The wrestling profession is harder than any other, not only in term of physical contact but the constant emotional detachment. Most of a wrestlers life is spent travelling to the next venue or training.

Anyway if my message has not changed your views on wrestling please do watch the hell in a cell match between the Undertaker and Mankind from St Valentines day Massacre in Febuary 1999. If the hairs on the back of your neck don't stand up then there is something wrong with you.
