Subject: 1984 & all that

Watched a programme about the miner's strike the other night, it was really interesting. The striking miners (who were the majority throughout the country) were constantly being prevented from acheiving their aim of bringing the country to a halt by the fact that miners in some of the North Nottinghamshire pits were still working (scabs!). To try and dissuade them so-called 'flying pickets' of miners from Yorkshire, Wales and all over the country would travel down to blockade the pits and try to intimidate those who were not joining in the strike.
The sheer numbers of men involved in this action meant that Nottinghamshire Police were overwhelmed and likewise police forces from other counties were drafted in from all round England to deal with the civil disorder and frequently violent demonstrations. As you might imagine, both miners and police were quite up for a bit of a ruck and scuffles frequently broke out.
Amongst the miners, the most fearsome adversaries they faced were London's metropolitan police, nicknamed 'the Whiteshirts' who had a reputation for dealing with rioters in a particularly heavy-handed way. Despite the ferocity of these clashes, both sides found that regardless of the frequency of the punch-ups, they still had a lot of down-time on their hands during the course of an average day. The picketers often found themselves playing football with the same rozzers who they'd been fighting with earlier on to alleviate the boredom.
For the police sent to places like Worksop and the other pits in North Notts. the best place to go when off duty was the nearby Lincolnshire town of Grantham, birthplace of Margaret Thatcher- the N.U.M's public enemy no. 1. A particularly notable watering hole in Grantham was the Black Dog pub, which was the favourite due to relatively cheap prices (at least to the guys from down south) the quantity of 'loose women' that could always be relied on to provide all manner of minge-related entertainment.
To this day, for policemen all over the country of a certain age, the mention of the Black Dog in Grantham will always raise a smile.

Well there you go! 10,000 rozzers can't be wrong! See all you cunts in there Christmas Eve.
