He did famously walk out over 2 years ago in what at the time seemed like 'creative differences' with his character and 'the direction' that the WWE was heading in.

In reality he was suffering with a career ending neck injury (first inflicted by Owen Hart in 1997) and he knew he could not continue. When he did come back for one final match at Mania 19 with The Rock he kept quiet so that only Vince, himself and The Rock knew that it was his last match. He lost cleanly and that was it.

He later came back as 'The Sheriff' of Raw in a non wrestling role but after his contract ran out with The WWE he could not come to a new agreement. He wanted rights to the name 'Stone Cold' to use in films in a way similar to the deal The Rock has got. But him and Vince could not come to an agreement and that is why he is not in it at the momnent.

It is heavily rumoured that he will be taking part in Wrestlemania XI in some form. Possibly to wrestle Will Clamp in a blindfold match.
