Subject: Opening partners

During my prolific and tragically short cricketing career I like The Atters had many partners but of a different nature. Here is a list of some of my top 5 most memorable

1) James Fellows- Mine and his partnership was along the good cop bad cop lines. Always a pleasure to bat with we had some good time such as eating crisps between overs in the Lincolnshire Schools finals at Lindum or see how many overs we could go without scoring a run! James always had the Knack of making me laugh when I got out which really annoyed our umpire and coach Nick ‘its Carnival time’ Laws.

2) Dan Woodhead- Now here is a lad I feel sorry for, so much potential but just didn’t get the breaks in his career. If only Nick Laws hadn’t declared away at Bourne (2nd year I think cuz we all saw Chris passenger there) when Dan was in the Mid 40s then who knows what might have been in the same way when Mike Atherton declared with Graeme Hick on 98*. Over the years mine and Dan’s running between the wickets has not been the best with numerous Inzaman run outs. Dan is currently hoping to break into Belvoir 3rds after a prolific last summer in the U15s.

3) Gareth Finch- To my memory only once and against the teachers, what was brilliant about this partnership was that Simon Curtis had been promised that he could open only for Chris Duncan to change his mind after much pestering from me and Gareth. This did not please Simon (sorry, mate) but his mardy was well worth it!!

4) Dave Walters- My first opening partner at Belvoir. A much under rated player at this level. Here was a lad who could bowl straight and hold a bat. Always reliable and didn’t moan when I hogged the strike!

5) Duncan Hazard- Mainly used as a bowler but has a fifty to his name (take note Woodhead). I thought that our ‘agricultural’ styles took the game to the bowlers. Attack is the best form of defence and all that!

Others that didn’t quite make the list are
Lewis Caley- for his elegant stroke play
Martin Railton- for his controlled edges against PK
Simon Curtis- So much potential and the best 12th man in the county!

Im sorry if ive forgotton anyone please let me know if i have!

Regards
Sarge
